are you going to pop that side cover off and check the tranny out

Like I said above, I could take the cover off, but unless there are obviously broken parts or teeth falling out, I wouldn't know what I was looking for?!?

Yeah, I have a Safety Klean tank at work. I wonder if it would hurt to take the plugs out and flush it from fill to drain with solvent???

Anyone?!?

Solvent wont hurt it at all. Have you ever taken an 833 apart? depending on which shift mechanisms they have in them they can be a little tricky to get the side covers back on. If I were you I would drain the oil, stick it all in with fresh oil, clutch and throwout bearing and take it for a drive. If the trans dont make wierd noises or kick out of gear when you let off the gas its probably OK. If you turn the trans over by hand and feel for grinding or binding while you go through the gears that will probably tell as much as taking it apart(if you dont know what your looking at) If you do take the cover off look for chipped gears or metal shavings in the bottom and look at the syncros for any wear and thats about all you can do with a visual inspection. Most of these that ran behind smallblocks are pretty decent because they are built pretty stout.

This will be the second time I have run a used 833 behind a small block. The first time was 30 years ago behind a slightly warmed 340, and I beat on that thing hard!! Never missed a shift.

I don't think I want to pull the cover. I'll probably just flush it with Safety Klean, clean it up a bit, and add a new real seal.

Does anyone know if the yoke from my 727 driveshaft will work in the manual trans?!?

Count the ouput splines that will tell you. I think 27 is the 904 yoke and 30 is the 727.
about 80% were 727 yoke size.

You need the 727 yoke, but the drive shaft is the length of the 904 shaft so you'll also need a new drive shaft.

I would strongly advise to change the front bearing before you put it in, that is the one part that is almost always bad, and it isn't hard to replace or expensive.

Also check the yoke play in the tail shaft when you take the seal out to see if the rear bushing needs to be replaced before you reinstall the new seal.
