Have a 72 400 dual snorkel that someone added another heatstove to the other snorkel, was thinking of removing the snorkels and making it look like a 70 71 340 air cleaner, the main difference i see is on the 70 71 340 air cleaner there is a inditation on the front were the 72 dual snorkel is smooth, has anyone done this before, seems the prices for 70 71 340 air cleaner is very expensive for a original one

If you have the time and skills, go for it.

There was someone that tried it before. You could even make the indentation if you got the skill to form it

Those dual rectangular snorkel air cleaners are worth some bucks too. If it were me I would look for an earlier oval snorkel one to modify.
I think the recess area was for AC compressor clearance, which is ironic since very few 340's actually had AC.
If you end up modifying that air cleaner I would be interested in the snorkels. I have one with a smashed snorkel I would like to refurb.

I ended up buying a '69 air cleaner because it was cheaper than what the '70 air cleaners are going for. You can also buy a new air cleaner from Mancini that looks similar to the 69/70. I'm not sure what year air cleaner is based on.

Now you have me wanting to mod one. I think I can duplicate the rolled openings by making a die. Just cutting the hole does not look finished to me.
Not too long ago you could buy one of these for $400 restored. Then someone came along and decided theirs was worth $800 and everyone followed suit. I guess if people are foolish enough to pay that much then they are actually worth that much.

@MoparMike1974 I've been planning to make a die too, so I can do the same thing. I've probably got between 30 and 40 72-73 340 air cleaners I plan to convert when I retire in a few months. The hard part will be trying to find orange 340 Four Barrell pie tins, since nobody reproduces them. I'm gonna call the ones I convert Air Cloners, and stamp them to prevent crooks from ripping someone off down the line!

I know a guy who can screen print the tins. The issue with making them would be licensing.

I made one out of a single snorkel. The prices are just too outrageous. I removed the trap door as well.

Here’s the other side. I just cleaned up the edges after I took the snorkel off.

Wrinkle black paint on the outside, black primer on the inside.
