I've read several old posts on this topic, so I understand that these numbers refer to the shop order number and somehow link back to build sheet data. OK...so with no build sheet and with no fender tag (both of which are true in my case), do the stampings really tell me anything about the original car?

68 Dart. So far, all i can say is that the rad support and the trunk rail came from the same car.

Vin on engine (340), transmission (4 spd) and the dash all match, but don't resemble the stampings mentioned.
engine/trans/dash: LS23PB278340
rad support/trunk: B8L119063

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that the car is a bastard, and I'm gonna' build what I'm gonna' build. It would just be interesting to know more about its origins.

I think it depends on the year? I thought the trunk and rad core stamping matched last 8 of the vin for 67-9?
Nope, '67 doesn't have the VIN on anything but the build sheet and VIN tag on the driver's door pillar. '68 moved the VIN plate to the top of the dash, but still, the VIN is nowhere on the car. Some HP engines in '68 had the VIN stamped crudely on the top of the block next to the bell housing. '69 started the VIN stampings on the body, engine, and transmission.

You are missing the year

The data says it is a dart, GTS hard top, with a 340 engine, unknown year, built in Hamtramck, and that it is the 178,339 car built.

On the GTS Registery there are two in your vin range, one could be yours?

So assuming the vin on the dash is OE to the car you have a GTS.

post some photos

This post might she'd some light
Where's the VIN number 68 Valiant

No. The VIN will give you basic info, but, without a build sheet or fender tag, no way to know what the other options were originally.

"It might be" that some late 68's have body VIN stampings, don't know. 68 is generally a "bad year." This is because if you unbolt the dash and separate it from the car, THERE IS NO VIN and no way to get it back. We had a guy on here bought a 68 with no dash frame. Don't know what he ever ended up doing

In this state, you just go to the Highway Patrol and have a new VIN assigned to the car. They do that to lots of highly modified and custom cars too. (I.E> dune buggies, Kit cars, etc.)

Each state I'm sure has slightly different laws and procedures regarding registration, VIN's, and pink slips (titles). Missing the VIN plate for any year is probably going to cause a problem just about everywhere. "68 really isn't any different than '67 and earlier when it comes to a missing VIN. Even the '69-up cars missing a VIN will probably have to get a new VIN assigned in some states (they do here), regardless if you have VIN on the pink slip or not. I have seen a few skate through by talking the inspector into using the fender tag, but, they're really not supposed to do that. In fact, they're supposed to certify that the VIN plate has the proper rosette rivets, which fender tags don't have. If I had a car missing the official VIN tag, I'd probably try to get one made, round up the correct rivets, and install it, as long as I know had the correct VIN.

According to OP. He has the vin on the dash, engine and trans match it. Problem is the rad and trunk stamping do not corospond to his vin.
He does not have a build sheet or a fender tag so he is trying to figure out how to get a build sheet or the like to know what his car should have.

The vin reads to be a GTS.

IIRC Chrysler Historical used to be able to produce a build sheet or the like for some VINs

If he can get a copy of the build sheet, great. If not, unless he's going to enter it in a stock/original class car show, or sell it to someone who cares, just build it the way you want it.
