So my son got tired of not having cup holders, so he made his own center console with cup holders and a pocket area to put stuff in.

He bought some MDF, vinyl, steel cup holders, and foam for the project. He measured between the bucket seats and took many measurements of the transmission tunnel to get the right curve since, as you all know, the transmission tunnel isn't centered.

He was going to attempt to sow the vinyl himself, but instead we opted to get it professionally covered. We dropped off the center console and materials at a local upholstery shop to do the the work. It cost $70.00 bucks. A little expensive I thought, but the finished product is pretty nice. I'm sure it was more than a couple hours worth of work, so maybe the cost was justified.

Anyway... I'll post of the pictures of the progress and finished product.

looks pretty good, they top stitched it so the seams are not bulky and the inner salvage lays 1/2 on each side and it's much straighter then just bottom stitching.. French seam stitching would be prettier but top stitch is 3 or 4 times faster (and MUCH easier to do)

Did they upholster over the cupholder holes? The pic of it in the car shows no cupholders

        Looks good
Gotta have a cup holder with a 4 speed. I added a console to my 66 Barracuda, just to put a cup holder in the console glove box. I got tired of spilling coffee on the boys and never liked the ones that hang on the door.

I have a bench but can usually wedge a cup pretty securely between the center arm rest and passenger seat belt. Most times it stays put, except when someone cut me off one day and I slammed on the brakes. Just left the drive-thru at wendys and my coke dumped everywhere. I'm sure anyone can guess my words after that.

I put a s.steel cup hoder in where my ash tray was, I then had to move my shifter back and up so I could reach it when strapped in. I`m thinking about putting it back in, in the console lid. Not a big deal tho , rarely would use it.

          Thanks all for the compliments.

Yes, they upholstered over the holes and then we just sliced and folded the vinyl into to the hole and glued it to the wood.

Then we used a couple of L-shaped brackets and a large hose clamp on each of the cup holders to clamp the cup holders in place.

Basically, we clamped the L-shaped bracket to the side of the cup holders. The brackets butt up against the top of the console keeping the cup holder cups from pulling out.

          I hope that makes sense.

Looks awesome! I'm in the middle of building something very similar for my 68 Dart.

Where did you get the cup holder inserts? Did you attach the console to the floor, or does it just sit on top?

Thanks! My son got them off of Amazon. Here's the link:

Amarine-made 2pcs Stainless Steel Cup Drink Holder with Drain Marine Boat Rv Camper

They're a bit large, but my son wanted to make sure you can fit a 7-Eleven Big Gulp, Del Taco Macho, or large water bottle sized cup/bottle inside.

It's not attached to the floor. It just sits there. Since it sits a little snug between the bucket seats, it won't move side to side and there's enough friction keeping it from moving forward or back.

            Thanks!

I don't know what all you just said, but thanks! LOL I think I know what a French seam is. I just hope I got a fair deal. Seems a little expensive, but let's say it took him 4 hours to make then that's $17.50 bucks an hour.

Yes that a a good price for an interior guy to do. My boss charges around 75.00 per hour for pattern and sewing things up.

I put a console in an put a cup holder in that, I also put a cigarette lighter in, so I can charge my cell.

You know...I've never seen an "A" body console that had a lighter in it, always "capped" off. Anyone else ever seen one??
