Hi Guys,

I’ve been looking at the cylinder heads from Competition Components, and they seem very appealing.
CNC Ported Competition Components Small Block Mopar Heads

But, before I make any decisions, I’d really like to hear from anyone who is currently running these heads—or has run them in the past.
How is the performance, build quality, parts quality etc.? Any real‑world feedback would be extremely helpful.

For some background:
The car is a street/strip.
My previous setup was with ported J-heads with 2,02 / 1,6 valves, running a hydraulic roller cam (Howards 712105‑10), about 9.5:1 compression, and a fairly streetable combo.
I’ve been racing it on and off, including some 1/8‑mile runs (7.36 @ 150 km/h).

Now I’m planning an upgraded top‑end. I’m looking for stronger midrange and better top‑end airflow without going overboard.
That’s why these Competition Components CNC heads caught my attention—especially the 2.08” version and the fully CNC’d chambers and runners.
But since they aren’t very common in the Mopar LA world, I want to know if anyone here has real experience with them.
Do they live up to the flow numbers? Any issues with valve geometry, rocker clearance, or cooling?

Any input, good or bad, would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards Daniel

Do you know if the price is for pair of heads or per head?

Hard to tell what they look like from those pictures.

Hi there,
Thanks for your comments. I've done some research and have come to the conclusion that for my cam with lift int. 565/ exh. 565 , promaxx 185 cc shocker heads is a good choice. They simply fit my cam almost as well as the competition components 2.05. Plus I save about 500 bucks.
I did a diagram that shows at my camsshaft lift the flow is almost the same, little advantage for the 2,05 competition but....

Green line is Competition 2,08, purple line is competition 2,05, red line is Promaxx and blue line is AFR.
To bad AFR don´t sell a CNC ported version of their heads, I Believe they would have been great...

Any thoughts on my choice?

Thanks

Daniel

I think you'll be pleased with the Shockers. I have a set of the standard PM 171 heads and the machine work is very nice. While those heads from CC are intriguing, they don't seem to have very much history, at least with the Mopar small block heads. I wouldn't pay the premium they are asking for something that is currently unproven. And to be honest, their reported flow at .300" lift and in the .500-.600 range seem a bit optimistic. I'd want to see them run on known flow bench against another head that has a good body of data around it like the Edelbrock.

Which cam are you using that is 565 lift. Is it a Howard’s 260/264?

Chances are, those heads were ported and flowed at Modern Cylinder Head, in Clinton Twp. Mi.

Is Bob even doing anything these days?
Been a ton of issues there in the last few years regards reliability, and worse.
I've never delt with Bob, Jeff did great work. Anyone else on here deal with Bob?

Here's the ProMaxx head. This is the unported version. The Shocker is the same head, just CNC ported and 2.08 valve.
