So my ignition switch had decided to throw itself a retirement party after 60 years. I have a spare that came with one of my spare junkyard gauge clusters, but no key to it, so I thought I'd swap the cylinders. There's a little release button, and it looks like the cylinder pulls out when you press it, but it remains stuck. Is there a trick to this? Or should I just buy a new cylinder and new switch and be done with it? Any QC issues on new ignition switches?

Thanks, I see you have to turn the key to the run position. Now to figure out if I should drill out the tab on the spare switch or just order a new one ...

I have some NORS ones if needed. I have drilled out the pin in the past just be careful doing it.

Don't drill anything....

Get a paper clip and bend a small L on the end.

Get a very small flat screwdriver and put that into the keyway.

Put a small amount of rotation toward the run position

Take the paperclip with the L on the end and go in and slightly press each pin up. It will take a bunch of tries but eventually it will turn.

Alternately you could go to a lock smith and they could do it in about 3 seconds using the correct tools

Google "lockpickinglawyer" for techniques and to purchase tools if need be.

Disclaimer: some areas the tools are considered illegal to own other than by licensed locksmiths, check with your local pd or lawyer
