Hi everyone.

Question about the transmission in the later model Dakota's. Are the bolt patterns the same for both the 6 and the 8? Are the transmissions themselves the same? Are there other engines that will bolt up? I assume the bolt pattern for the automatic and the stick shift are the same.

Thanks everyone.

I think they will both bolt up. The 6 has less strong parts.

Both the 42 and 46 series transmissions eill bolt to a LA. The 42/46RH series from a 2WD Dakota or Ram is the way to go.

I will be using a 42RH in my 65 Dart wagon with a 273/235 engine. I had another 42RH but sold it to another member.

I’ve had mine bolted to the engine to mock up the enlargement of the tunnel.

3.9 V6, LA, and Magnum engines all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern.
You didn't say if you're talking about manual or automatic transmissions here, but they will all physically bolt up. Just be aware of the usual balancing differences- V6, LA 273/318 and early '72 and older 340s are all neutral (internal) balance, LA 360, Magnum 5.9 and late '72/all '73 340s each have their own unique external balance; which will affect flywheel or flexplate/convertor use.
Edit: For what it's worth, the 4.7L V8 and the 5.7 (et al) Gen III hemis also use the same bellhousing pattern; but both use an eight bolt crank as opposed to the six bolt stuff everything else uses.
