Alright, FABO members..need your help again. My front planetary gear TO ME looks like it is FUBAR, but I want to be sure before I trash this gear. It looks like a ring that would normally be mounted on top of this gear has snapped off, and a chunk seems to be missing from it.

So, IF this is trashed..what are my options? Stock replacement is perfectly OK with me, but should I upgrade while I'm at it? I'm guessing an upgrade would involve replacing the rear planetary as well as the output shaft. I've looked online for a 3 pinion front planetary to swap out but I haven't found anything so far.

I also don't want to get into too much $$$ here. I need it for the engine rebuild down the road - which will be a fairly minor upgrade to the stock 273. The rest of the 904 is stock plus a shift kit, wider bands, 24 spring return, and 5 clutches/frictions.

Find Torqueflite Patty On ebag, he has a lot of stuff for 727's & 904's. He is reasonable & can probably help you out.

Thanks guys - kinda what I figured..looked pretty trashed. I'll seek out Torqueflite Patty too. Appreciate it!

So get this. I find someone online that sells them - A&A Transmission out of Indiana. The guys there are great, and I get a reconditioned 3 pinion gear ordered over the phone. I get it in the mail today, and it looks exactly the same as the one I pulled out of my 904 - 'defect' and all.

It turns out that it's not defective. It's simply a relief that is cut into the gear set allowing the thrust plate to fit over it. The thrust plate has a flat side to it that matches the relief in the planetary that holds the plate in place. Without having anything for me to compare it to, I just assumed that something had sheared off. Good thing it isn't, and I can use what I already have.

Hopefully I can send it back without much hassle..

Glad you shared the info. If anyone else's runs into the same issue with their front planetary gear hopefully this thread will help. I don't recall running into any relief cuts that look like a missing chunk with my 904 or 727 torqueflights in the past however it been quite a while since I've had one opened up...... Perhaps I just don't remember the relief cuts.
