Does anyone hone the inside of their carrier bearings to make install/removal easier? if so, how much do you remove?

He said carrier bearings, not pinion bearings. There's no need EVER to hone carrier bearings.

well on a stock Dana 60 the shims to set backlash and bearing preload go behind the carrier bearings so that's a real good reason to do it.

They go between the bearings and the housing. Not behind the bearings.

Oh well close enough! LOL

I bet the guy saying he runs honed bearings doesn't know what it means.

Did you all know there is a tool to spread the housing for installation of the carrier? That is what the holes in the housing are for.

Just be careful not to overstretch them with that tool. There is a published spec you don't want to go over.

Any D60 I build in the future will be the Strange unit. Those Danas are a pain in the *** to put together.

just so it is clear. the expurt says that they hone the inside of the carrier bearings to slip over the carrier. that way they can change backlash easier. then when they set the backlash, they tighten everything down. i have a pair of bearings that are honed, case spreader and various fsm, so i know that to set stuff at. i even have the ford rear axle tool that fits dana 60 and a few others. i myself would never set it up that way and run it down the road.

Using the case spreader, I've never had an issue with any of the Danas.

But you don't remove the carrier bearings to adjust backlash, since the shims install between the outside of the bearings and the case. LOL

the bearings pointed to, are the ones they hone to make it easier to remove/change to set back lash. when all is done, they just tighten everything down.

Yeah, those are the bearings there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO HONE. They don't have to be removed to change backlash. If that's what they're doing, RUN, because they're doin it WRONG.

That diagram is slap incorrect. The shims do not install behind the bearings. They install between the bearings and the housing. I have TWO Danas within 100 feet from me that I REBUILT MYSELF. One is a Dana 60 and the other is a Dana 70U. They are both the same in that aspect.

After some quick research, I am wrong on some of them and you are correct. On MY two, that's a Dana 60 rear under my 75 F250 Ford and a Dana 70U under my rat truck (originally under a 93 D350, BOTH rear axles take the shims between the bearing race and rear housing, as I described above. But it seems some of them do indeed take the shims between the bearings and the carrier. That's just totally stupid, but my bad for the bad info.

I have setup bearings that I've used for the Dana 60 in my '66. They're handy when setting one up. I just honed them until they slipped on. You're supposed to replace them with new ones once you have the shim packs determined though.

on my dana 60 , i sanded the pinion shaft where the bearings ride with 220 grit, also the spool ends where bearings ride with 220, then i honed the bearings some to let them push on with a sleeve and small hammer, i done this back in 1992, done all my dana 60.s this way, i have no wear on the bearing where it rides on the stubs. also the bearings are so hard , to hone , you cant measure how much was removed. i used a sunnen rod hone for that. just food for thought. i have changed gear ratios at the track without using a press. makes life easier. btw its a race car,

You can run them on either side. Doesn’t really matter other than personal preference. I like them under the bearings as I find they don’t get mangled and it’s easier while setting up the rear end. Either way works though.
