i was going to change gear oil in the 4 speed and fix a leaking reverse detent, when I pulled the detent out the ball fell in the trans..... any suggestions on how to get it out without pulling the trans?????

Drill a hole in the bottom ;^) ( not helpful but hopefully it made you smile.)
You could try a magnet on an articulating arm and get lucky.
Just a wild thought. get a long skinny spring like from a screen door and run a small cord down the center. tie a small doughnut shaped magnet to the cord and pull snug to the spring. the harder you pull the string the spring should arch. you might be able to get the spring to the low point of the trans and pull the ball out. Probably quicker to pull the trans.

Drain the fluid out and it should come with it

Tried draining and fishing with a magnet, pulled side cover and got it right out... now I just need a side cover gasket which no auto store around me carries lol

It most certainly is!!
Drain oil. Flush with kerosene or varsol.
Tape a piece of clear tubing,3/8” to the shop vac hose. Vacuum away.
