51* total? someone or something isn't right. you set initial and total with vac un-hooked. now running down the road with vac advance i can see it at 45ish. thats how you get the mpg out of it. but thats differen't then setting initial and total timing..
 
Hooked up a timing light and ran it up to 2500-3000 saw 51* and said that isn't right., should be around 35-38... as others have likely mentioned.

The MP engine manual says it's not uncommon at all to see a tic over 60 total, including vacuum advance. I've seen it first hand. Of course, if you have that much only including initial and total, then I agree, something's wrong.

thats fine with vac hooked up but not without vacuum like he making it sound.

It was 51 and so he disconnected the vacuum advance. How else should I make that sound? Lots of comments but no useful info.

not enough information coming from you.

vac advance is supposed to be unhooked when setting timing. that way you get your proper initial and total timing. once those are set you can hook up the vac advance. depending what pod it has you could have 51* while cruising. thats how it improves mpg.

Well WTF exactly are you looking for here, Sparky? You've given pretty limited info on your engine combo. You know, pertinent things like compression ratio, camshaft specs, rear gear, you know important things that can affect what ignition curve you might need? So I don't know what else you're expecting. Also, you've been given GOOD info in this thread.....unless you don't know what you're doing and if that's the case, say it and we'll gladly fill you in. We all started somewhere. No one here was born dick first with a wrench in his hand and a toolbox tied to their umbilical cord.....except maybe @junkyardhero. You've been informed on how a vacuum advance works, what it does and how to adjust it correctly, plus lots of other things you can glean from, but there's no useful info here? I think you need to step back and really READ the thread. Also, keep in mind you're being helped for FREE.

Yup and it also helps "fill in" those flat spots with some additional part throttle acceleration. Just no reason not to run it on a street car. We're trying hard to help the guy, I think he needs to reread the thread. Plenty of help here even with his limited info given. Otherwise, I need to get this out.....

sounds like your "mopar guru" "forgot" to hook back up the vacuum advance after setting up your "tune".

Not hardly,he plugged it. Said to much advance from having the distributor curved.

The tuner appears to not have an understanding how and why vacuum advance is applied.

Hook it up to ported vacuum source and go for a drive. On a level road or slight uphill, constant pedal, does it surge or ping? If not, leave it hooked up.

A low compression, stock shortblock 318 can likely take all of that 51* of timing at cruise. Especially true if it is a post 72 model shortblock.
