This is buried in one of my other threads, but since I need an answer right away, I decided to start a new thread.

I'm looking to pick up a 65 Barracuda on Wednesday and an issue came up that has me a little concerned.

I've been told that the production number for 65 Barracudas is 64,596.
The sequence number in the VIN is 174,303.

If you take into account that the sequence started at 100,001 this car has a sequence number much higher than the production number.

Does the sequence number take into account ALL 65 A-bodies? If so, that may explain it. If not, then what other reason would there be? The VIN plate looks original-- to the car.

No, the sequence # is the number of cars off that assembly line for that model year.

are you talking the SO number, like on the radiator support? Then I got #1!!! No, I understood the SO number was just the number on the order form for that car. Others say its the sequence number off the line...who knows? is sequence number on VIN or support?

The last 6 digits of the VIN is the sequence number.

Since the sequence number is all cars from that plant for the model year, then that explains it all.

Does anyone know what total production was from the Los Angeles plant for the 65 model year?

I,d like to see where this car Falls in the production year.

Scheduled production date should be on the fender tag.

Can there be two of the same sequence number from different plants?

    Yes.

Each plant typical started with 100001 for assigned VINs (some variances in mid year model & earlier years, etc.)

Cars were not built in VIN order & multiple models were on the lines at the same time.

Cool. I never thought you could have two identical sequence numbers. Sounds like you could have that a bunch of times depending on the runs and factories.

Yes, but the VIN will be different as the assembly plant is included in the VIN. The same sequence number is also very likely to be a different car model as well...

    Hello,

This is my first post and not sure how to create a new post, so i am attaching to a similar post to see if anybody can help - Thanks

I have a 64 barracuda titled and has a vin number of 52515353

The vin on the door matches the dash and the original production sheet matches the tag in the engine compartment. The tag on the door is original and never removed from the car. But the vin number doesn't match the 64 barracuda. It build date is 9/9/64

Any help on this would be great

    Thanks
    Matt

I don't think that's a US vin, maybe Canadian or export? IIRC the vin on the pillar would be a 10 digit number first 2 would be model V for valiant and 8 for barracuda

Come to find out with a little steel wool - on the door plate there is a V8 in front of the 5

But no V8 on the dash plate. Its is titled as a 64, but actually a 65?

    Thanks
    Matt

The V8 stamping on the VIN tag means it came factory with a V8

    Snow,
I can decode it for you but it would be best if you had the Fender Tag as well. A build date of 9/9/64 would be a 65. Remember, production numbers ran first Monday in August to send Friday of July following year. So you have a very early 65. But it would be best if I had your Fender Tag.

Nope the V8 is stamped for V8 the raised letters after that are the outward stamping for the VIN. If it was a slant the 1st two numbers stamped inward are 18 instead of V8. Trust me I have had several Barracudas with slants and V8s.

My lack of knowledge on the slant Barracudas! Owned 2 V8's and thats what i learned BTI...before the internet. Thanks for pointing that out. I always read that as valiant barracuda, now i see that 1 8 is a slant Barracuda. Never noticed the Plymouth Valiant/Barracuda 'V8' on end as its not reported on some breakdowns, ie.
1965 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth V.I.N. Information

Also some sites claim so number is sequential number off line. That doesnt work in my case as I have 100001 and a build date of April 1 on a 65 "S"? I would think a 001 car would have a build date of aug 1 for new model year? Plenty of stuff out there thats open to debate, but looks like your V8 is accurate, thaks!

No problems I am all Early A Barracuda so on others I am at a loss. I think I even sold you a tail light section years ago. I usually try to gain as much knowledge on cars I own just for that reason to help myself and others when buying a car because as old as these are who knows what took place through the years.
