Do you put drill a small hole in your thermostat?

When I was a young lad, one of my early motorhead mentor/teachers who was a die-hard Mopar guy taught me to always drill a small hole in the face of thermostats when putting in a new one.
The theory was to allow any trapped air to escape while it was filling.
I've always done it and never questioned the logic.
    Anyone else?

Never heard of that but the logic sounds reasonable.

Many come with the riveted bleed hole.

Some people simply loosen the heater hose to get the initial air pockets out.

THIS!! Remove heater hose on intake connection, I usually try and remove at heater and "rig" hose up in air or add a scrap of hose. Fill until you "hit water" and reconnect hose.

Stupidity is my guess. And yes I do it to if there's not one there already, or I enlarge the one that's there if I think it looks small.

Old timer thought me this trick 50 years ago. Doesn’t hurt a thing and is easier than removing hoses that may be stuck. Plus it’s one and done. Never have to do it again until you want to replace it.

It also helps any air pocket that may occur.

I have. Usually I fill the block thru the thermostat port up to point of thermostat. Install thermostat and housing, top hose and finish filling thru radiator. This fills block and radiator up to thermostat.

I have seen them come with the bleed hole but I have never had the need to add one that didnt. So long as your filler neck is the highest point, any air will naturally work its way out.

Only after the thermostat opens. It's more when you refill the system and start it up to warm the engine. (like a freshly rebuilt engine)

And you got all the credit. Lmao.

Some people also just fill the motor through the thermostat mount hole on the intake before installing the new thermostat.

I always get a chuckle reading the lack of forethought of some folks. You have it off.. so why not fill it there initially. ..then after the stat is in and sealed up tight...fill the upper portion of the radiator..."nah, get the drill instead..."jk
For the person who said something about a stuck hose...
if a stuck hose detours the idea , consider the hose is shit if its stuck and needs replaced anyways. Remember...you twist and pull .....twist n pull. Lmao :)

So half of us drill holes all the time and the other half pull their hose all the time.
