Early A (65), how do you get the door lock cylinders out?

The door panel is off, I pulled the horseshoe retaining lock off, but couldn't turn the cylinder enough to get the tab off the rod.

If I push the door button (open), there is more clearance to take the rod off at the door jamb side, but how?

I could always break it, but Im hoping for a more friendly way.....

thanks

You should be able to remove the linkage rod from the latch end and then pull the rod and lock cylinder out together. Just be carefull you don't bend something or break the link off the back of the cylinder. If you do, they're pretty much junk.

How does the linkage rod come off the latch end? it looks like there is a retainer, but I'm not sure how it locks the rod in place.

Flip the top of the retainer away from the rod, the rod will then come out of the retainer.

OK...sounds easy enough. but after 1/2 hour of pushing moving jiggling....that thing won't let go of the rod. Yes...I'm frustrated beyond belief. A 5 second job that I can't do.

drivers door, drop light in the door, left hand pushing in the button to gain some room....leave me the right hand with a screwdriver, reaching in to move that tab thingy. Its not rusted, it moves slightly, rattles on the thing even.

it LOOKS like the clip should slide towards the door, moving the retainer to a bigger hole; Nope...won't slide.

Won't pivot up. Won't pivot down, won't slide the other way. W T F ! ! ! ! ! ! exactly, which way should it move? I'm sure its a DOH! moment in the works...

Help

The clip just clamps around the rod where it attaches to the latch. You should be able to reach in and pull the clip away from the rod at the top of the clip. You can then rotate the clip down to allow you to remove the rod from the latch.

the clip for the linkage rod is a slide clip. There is a tab on the inner end (by the latch release lever) that you have to raise slightly to get it to slide toward the outside of the door. Once you've moved it at least a 1/2" or totally off, the link should come right out of the hole and you can pull it out with the lock cylinder.

If you're not in a hurry, I'll be in Philly on Wednesday. Could come by and give you a hand. Done it before on my 65's.

thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. with spinning, slight tugging and jiggling, I was able to get the lock out the hole, want rotate it off the dogleg end of the link. Its at the 'smithys' now for a key. I'll get it back in a few days.

That will give me a little more time to play with the gate slider. I'll get it, thanks again for the offer!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike

Just let me know if things don't work out, Trenton is just a few stops by train from Philly.

there is a e clip that hold the lever that the linkage goes into on the lock cylinder remove that clip and the lever will come off of the cylinder, make note which way it faces for reinstallation the horshoe clip holds the cylinder in the door
p.s. this is for early a bodies only, 67 and later had the little plastic clip ya flip out to the side

No it doesn't....that's the problem with those early lock cylinders. If the tail piece comes off there is no way to reattach it as the aluminum in the lock cylinder housing was peened over to hold the tail piece. Once it's worn off, there isn't enough metal left to do anything with. I've tried to drill and tap the cylinder for a screw but there just isn't enough metal to work with. Maybe if you know someone that can do some fine heliarc work, you might be able to repair it.
