I just bought a complete 96 ram 5.9 engine with the harness and computer to go into my 73 duster. Rather than convert to a carb I am wondering if using the factory efi is a viable option and how well it works with maybe a cam upgrade later or if it's possible to control a 42re or 46re. I really know nothing when it comes to efi but am a quick learner.

It sounds like he already has the OBD2 ECU.
I think 96-97 was the changeover right? And some vans got obd1 in 96 and trucks got obd2. Some weird stuff like that. I thought I’d throw it out there in case he was still using obd1

I'm not sure which one I have, haven't really looked at the harness yet. The ecu has 3 plugs.

I watch this guy on YT a lot, go check out this video might be a good start.
.

I think he has another as well, he made it sound super simple to make it work. Good luck and don't forget to share your progress!

I have seen that video, and will probably watch it ten more times when I start the wiring!

From my understanding I can run a 727 and have no problems? I plan to eventually run a 46re but have the 727 now and have to take steps as money allows.

I think 1996 is the changeover year. SCT and the tuners that use them all say to call first with a 96 PCM to see if it can be tuned. I never got clarification if that meant some 96 PCMs with three connectors cannot be tuned or if they are making sure it’s just a three connector PCM. So far, I have never seen a 96 model year full size truck or van with the single connector OBD1 PCM.

I have selected three speed transmission within a 99 model year OBD2 PCM in my truck and the 46RE still started off in first gear and shifted normally into second and then into third. Some people say to get a PCM from a manual transmission truck but if you are having it tuned anyway they should be able to change it to three speed auto or to manual.

On most it's 96 and up. On a lot of Fords, it was 95.
