Filler neck grommet hell! New fuel tank install

Looking for some advice on my 1972 Dart Swinger. Replaced the fuel tank out of neccesity. With the new tank fully strapped in the filler neck is not lining up, tank is about a 1/4 in to low.

I have read in the forums and watched several seasoned A-body youtubers who express the difficuty on getting the filler neck through the grommet. I tried lowering the passenger side a bit, got it lined up but was unable to get the filler started in grommet even with lubrication. Also tried the tank totally loose with someone supporting from the bottom. Fought with it almost 2 hours on and off yesterday. I am going to try heating the grommet with a low temp heat gun next run. Any additional advise? Should the tank be fully strapped in to start the filler neck?

I really want to get this baby tagged and out cruising! Thanks for input.

Loosen the tank
Unscrew the filler neck from the quarter
Use some Vaseline or silicone spray on the tube to grommet areas.

Fit the tube into the grommet then raise the tank a bit while aligning the filler tube to the quarter.

Lastly are you sure you have the correct parts? Gasket?

All research shows it is the correct tank and gasket, original filler neck.

Maybe heat up grommet in water, and keep everything loose until started. Good luck!

72 tank on the left and 69 tank on the right. I tried a used 72 Dart tank in my 69 Dart and the filler tube neck was off a couple inches and would not line up. The tanks' filler neck locations are off slightly. I ended up ordering a correct 69 Dart replacement tank that my 69 filler tube fit perfect. You will also notice on the later model Darts, that the rubber gasket that screws to the trunk floor that the filler tube runs through is wider. Wider because of the offset filler location on the tank. I hope this helps.

When I replaced the tank in my 68, I left the rubber ring out in the sun to make it softer.. put a thin coat of grease on it and the filler went in with minimal headache. I need to replace the neck to quarter panel gasket. Mine as toast and I overlooked getting a new one. I replaced everything else. New one comes in this week though.

when i did the new tank, filler and donut in the 68 dart it was a real bear to get it all together. the stuff was all new and from tanks inc, but the donut was **tight**.

like in life: lube, pressure and angle of attack will get you there.

Some of these grommets are as hard as plasic. Heat the gromet up with a heat gun but not in the tank if it had fuel in it, Get it warm and pliable wipe some Dawn dish washing liquid on the grommet and tube. and push it in.

Solved my filler neck probably with a heat gun to heat the grommet, then some all purpose grease on the filler neck and grommet. about 45 minutes of cusing as well but got it in there.

Getting it through the grommet and into the tank is 2/3 the battle. Once you got that, did it let you attach it to the quarter panel properly? And without stressing the quarter panel? That can be the next challenge.

Yes it connectes just fine at the Gas cap, the

No stress on the rear 1/4 at all, the only additional issue is getting the fuel filler neck floor seal back in place, I had the seal pulled up the neck and it is so tight at the bottom I have not gotten in all the way back down in place yet. That is today's adventur among others.

You have to do it a little at a time. Kinda both at the same time. As you're lifting the tank into place, you need someone else to guide the filler neck into the grommet. It's much easier with two people.

As long as all the parts are correct, assemble but leave everything loose until it is all fitted together. Then start tightening up the screws and bolts. Dang, I need to backread before commenting. LMAO
