I have weighed ever option and turn every stone in the decision about my powerplant. As most of you probably know (but some may not so I'm gonna start from the top) my orginal plan for my dart was gonna be to regasket a 318 I pulled from a 86 dodge truck. But I kept running into issues and problems and the final issue was the bores was pitted due to some rust. So it needed bored. Well after lots of consideration and research and number crunching I have decided to...... (drum roll lol)
Build the old 360 I have setting in the building. It was originally pulled out of a 77 dodge charger about 15 years ago for my barracuda. But I ended up never using it. I did however use the heads on a 318 I put together that I put in the barracuda. When I sold the barracuda I swapped the 4bbl intake and heads out and kept them!
But the block has been setting in a building waiting to be rebuilt. So I have came up with a new plan and I'm sticking to it this time around!! I talked to a local machinist he is clean bore and hone for 190! I agreed to do the bearing and freeze plugs to save money. So here the build.
    360 block .030 over (maybe .040 if .03 isn't enough)
    Speed pro h116 pistons
Ported 360 heads with stock sized valves. I am gonna replace the old valves with new ones.
    Lunati 10200703 camshaft
    340 4bbl stock intake Holley 600cfm carb
    Headers with dual exhaust.
I know the cam is a little large for a stock stall and 600cfm carb but It will give me room room upgrade without having to do a cam swap in the future. Later on a few years down the road i can save up get a better carb. 2800 stall and I will be set! And I have 8.8 limited slip 3.73 rearend for the future also. So by the time I'm finished I should have a peppy little combo!
    What do you guys think?

I think you need some speed master heads, cheaper at 279. Each "today"
I think that 318 ... I'd hold onto it anyways.

Sounds like a good plan. I think the only thing I would do differently is put in the stall converter while the engine is out and access is better. I wouldn't want to split it back apart just to get it done if you know now that you are going that direction. But that said, if it's not in the budget now, then down the road it will have to be. Other than that I say the 360 is the way to go.

Yea I'm gonna hang on to the 318 just in case I ever need one. My old truck is racking up the mileage you never know.

I was actually thinking about that myself but as of now I cant afford a new converter. Maybe if I just happen across a good deal on one!?!
But for now its not in the budget. The machinist said it would be after Christmas before he could start on it so that gives me more time to save up.

It might bore 4.04 too, never know. For a truck or something not too hairy...it would last as long as any other

Do not try to save money by sacrificing quality on the converter.

Carb might be a bit small, but try it out to see what it will do. JMO

Man every time I hear a guy decide to run a 360 instead of a 318 I think to myself now there’s a smart man. FREE cubic inches.

Obviously his combination is all wrong. Not worth doing unless it has a 4” arm, aluminum heads, .650lift cam 1,000cfm carb, 4500stall. Just kidding sounds like you have a solid plan. Now the hardest part is the execution. I’m going to guess your plan is a solid 350hp 400ftlb +\-goal. I’ll be whatching cause I’m planing of redoing my 360 soon with the H116CP’s with a set of home ported J’s.

Did you run that cam with stock heads and Rockers. If so any clearance issues?

J heads with 2.02 valves, the guides were cut down and the spring pads were milled off to get the spring height, plus they were gasket matched ported

That’s what I figured. That something for the OP to think about.

What springs are you running? And at what height? They recommend their 73949 springs. I figured I would have to cut the guides down I was unaware the pads had to be milled off as well. Thanks for that info.

Yea I know it was ment for the 318 but that when south. It will work until I can afford something better! What carb would you recommend?
What converter would you recommend? I the car will be full weight probably 3400 with me in it. And 2.76 gears for now until the 71/4 gives up the ghost.

Depending on what you are going to do with the car, I'd recommend a 750 cfm carb.
