Fitment struggles: power steering, alt, engine mounte

Well, new mounts same issue. Engine sitting level but still not enough room. Notched out the bracket and pulley spins free but there is no way there is enough room for a belt or any vibration.

Also not sure how the return hose is supposed to fit between the bracket and the pump connect. A bit perplexed.

Wondering if it’s possible to tear down the front end, remove harmonic balancer, and reseal the oil pan with an LA timing cover with the engine in the vehicle. Would need to purchase a new water pump and a federal PS steering pump. Kinda feels like I’m throwing away money at his point but I just want to get back on the road.

Why not take out the grinder and a death wheel and make clearance? It’s just sheet metal.

Thought about it a bit. Couldn’t find a good reason not to. Got it to fit with minimal grinding. Coming together finally!

…now on to trying to fit the clutch fan in with the original radiator. Oops, overlooked that one too.

I am reading through this again and looking at these pictures. It looks like you still have the modified Magnum alternator bracket and are moving forward with the van version of the Magnum power steering bracket, and no air conditioning. The issue there will be, if I recall correctly, the serpentine belt will contact itself between the smooth idler pulley and the water pump pulley. The easy fix for that is a non-air conditioning Magnum alternator bracket because it moves the idler pulley up away from the water pump pulley about one inch. However, that would require the correct Magnum alternator and I cannot say for sure if that all will fit with your valve covers.

Can you add a picture of the alternator area near the valve cover from an angle standing over the right front fender?
 
Not the same application, but on my 68 Cuda the low mount Saginaw pump high pressure line ran into the motor mount stand. I tried a bunch of different ps hoses and none fit. I wound up using a banjo fitting to make a right angle connection to the pump. I had the ps hose modified at all hydraulic hose shop.

Mine was an la, not a magnum.

Been trudging through trying not to change too much more but I’ve been told I’m playing the domino game. Trying to fix/alter something only to have to chase down the problems it created.

Still have the modified bracket since I have the smaller alternator that would sit in it. Still need to make tweaks to get the alternator pulley to sit in line with the rest. Also been mentioned that I need an AC delete pulley. Some confusion there since the diy magnum thread mentioned they didn’t need one with the right sized belt. Not sure what to believe at this point.

I do see what you mean by the water pump and idler pulley gap. Looks pretty tight but I don’t have a serp belt to test it. Still in limbo with some other parts that don’t fit so trying not to buy anything new until I know what will work. I guess that’s part of the problem!

Having an interesting time with the hoses myself! 64 high pressure line had a different flare than the pump, fixed that with an adapter. Your post made me go double check to see if I can get it in. Hose is loooong so I was able to spool it back in itself under the car and get it screwed in. Guessing the extra loops isn’t a problem since it’s pressurized but I have no idea. Thanks for the reminder to check the fit there too!

Even my low pressure line is two different hose sizes cobbled together at this point.

The AC delete pulley mounts on the bracket where the compressor used to go. You cannot use one since that part of your bracket has been removed. The purpose of this AC delete bracket was to allow you to run the same belt without the compressor. And they look like crap.

On a truck or Dakota, the power steering pump is mounted higher than a van. So on the truck and Dakota you can bypass the compressor with the non-AC routing and a shorter belt, without using a bypass pulley.

On a van, the power steering pump mounts closer to the center of the engine, so you cannot use the non-AC routing without a bypass pulley because the belt will touch itself at the water pump.

Now, trucks, Dakotas, and vans were all offered without air conditioning. In these cases they still used their original power steering brackets but they all got a non-AC specific alternator bracket. This non-AC alternator bracket relocated the idler pulley up specifically to fix the belt touching at the water pump on the vans.

Also, the magnum swap website is not really wrong, but it is just a starting point with what they knew at the time.

Hopefully that clears up the differences.
 
Very helpful! Kinda sounds like I picked the road that had a lower pulley and lower pump so even buying a non-standard belt kinda has me out of luck.

After a little consideration and option weighing I’m pulling stuff off the old 273 and going back to V-belt. That I know how to hook up, I know it will fit, and it only costs the price of a fuel pump eccentric and parts I have laying around. Dont have to wrestle with different alternator brackets, AC deletes, and cobbled together power steering hoses

Honestly, being a little hesitant to try figure out electric fuel pumps, electric fans, and larger alternator regulating played a huge part of it.
