Provisions can be made to take him along no matter what the cost. That dog will not survive. He will look for you for the rest of his short life. I would never Leave "Duke". He goes every where with me. He will not leave my side. That is how loyal Dogs are to there owners. My wife hates him he is not allowed on the furniture. But when I go to bed he lays on the couch in my spot until I get up.If she gets out there first and sees him on the couch. he will not get down for her and she can't move him at all. He is waiting for me because he knows I'm coming to watch the early news , and he gets a piece of toast. "He is a 140 lb. black lab". My wife hates him. but she knows he mine and she just mumbles and deals with him. Don't let your best freind behind you will regret it. Steve

Heres a pic of duke on the couch my wife took to show me he is going on the funiture. Do you think I care. She says he moans at her and rolls upside down and won't move. My advise to her was to stay in the kitchen and leave him be until I get up. She tried hitting him with the fly swatter he took it from her and chewed the handle. That'll show her. "My dog is my best freind" I know he would die to save me and I would do the same. "Reconcider" Steve

I won't comment on the whole take or leave thing. I just know I couldn't leave mine behind. Anyhoo. Contact one of your local German Shepherd Rescue groups. They will be happy to help you find a quality family for your Raider.

Hey guys, maybe you don't know the situation......
The O.P. might be doing what is best for the dog and not for himself.
That's a beautiful dog, i'm sure he has no other choice.
Give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

I immediately apologize if it seemed like I was jumping the OP. It was not my intention. It must be a hard thing to do. I still suggest checking with a local GSD rescue group. We have three in our area that are very reputable and commited to finding good homes for GSDs. They check out the home and the adoptive owners. They also require that you have experience with the breed.

I didn't take it as that. You weren't jumping the O.P. in my opinion.
Example that i have to go with is we got a german shepard from germany a few years back because the owner had a stroke and couldn't take proper care of the dog. The dog was an ex police dog there and a search and rescue dog. She was 4 years old at the time.
My wife needed a service dog for her medical condition so we were selected to take the dog.
We had to pay for transport and all of the vet checks, and the dog arrived intact though a little bit scared and shaken up from the long flight.
She settled right in within a few months and became a welcome part of our family.
The only problem we have had with her is all she knew was commands in german, and we took her to a certified trainer to switch her over to english.
She is a very good and well behaved dog, and we haven't had a problem with her at all.
She looks different than north american german shepards, as she is mostly black with a little brown. The native indians here are scared of her when she is with Christine walking around the city. One said it's because she looks so much like a wolf. Her name is Gitta, which is translated to Bridgette in english.
Anyway, dogs do get used to their new owners and live on to be happy.
    My experience,
    Tom.

I tell you what how about you join the military and then be forced to move to a place where you most likely won't be able to keep both of your dogs. I don't WANT to give him up I am simply trying to do the best for Raider. If your interested in taking him then let me know. Thank You!

Best of luck finding him a new home. A German Shepherd rescue may be able to help like mentioned above. I wonder if you could donate him to a police department and he could be trained as a police dog?

Where ever he goes I hope he is happy. Best of luck on your transition to a new base!

Sorry you have had to make this decision.. I had to do the same with a three year old shep many many years ago, and I hurt thinking about him all the time. My current 10yr old GSD was just over a year when we got him. Had been through three owners who for a variety of reasons - too big, allergies etc. kept taking him back. Sure he was a little out of sorts when we got him, but once he knew I was his master, he became the best shep I have ever had.

As you know, any pack animal will adjust to losing the leader of the pack. They might try to become the leader, or they will submit to a new one. As long as their new owner can provide the level of leadership and love that you have provided, he will be fine.

That is a beautiful dog and you are a beautiful person for taking him. His owner did not just give him up. And you didn't get him for free. So anyone can see he went to a good home that needed and wanted him, and the dogs previous owner is looking down on you and you will be blessed for your decission to take him no matter the cost.

My Duke was at a kill shelter. I saved him from death. he was 8 months old and wouldn't bring a duck back. So he was usless to his trainer. They then are put down.

I also brought 9 black labs home from Arkansas. The owner had them in a metal milk crate and was going to drown them in a drum of water, he just drowned 10 retrievers in. They were 2 weeks old , and I drove them home to Pa. Numbered them and bottle fed them every 4 hrs.. Found them all homes. We kept "Bullit" our other Black lab. named after a race track in Brashier, Texas we came from. He is my son's , and Dukes freind.

Absolutely false. Dogs are adopted all the time and they adjust just fine.

Out of respect for this military family, I am withholding any other comments; to them I say 'Thank you for your sacrifices.'

Okay gentleman, I have deleted 5 posts so far and given out an infraction. At this point in time if we don't get back on track to trying to find this lovely dog a good home then my finger is going to punch the "LOCK" button.:violent1:

Many cities have foster families setup to take care of pets while their owners are serving in the military. I wish you the best in finding him a suitable place.....

NetPets.org is a Foster program which provides temporary foster homes. We are trying to find him a permanent home. Thanks for the information. I regret posting the ad on here. I'm sure we will find a home in the local area with a loving deserving family. If a moderator wants to go ahead and lock or delete this thread thats fine with me. I have the interested parties PM's in my box and if things don't work out here locally I will be contacting you guys.

Yeah I feel bad how this thread went. Very un-FABO-like. I can certainly see how in your situation, you would want to find a permanent home. Maybe the info about the foster program will be seen by a FABO member willing to foster a military family's dog who needs it. Meanwhile, I have faith you will find the right home for your shepherd. Sorry you have to go through this. Please keep us updated.

    cdawglean,
Sorry you had to see the side of FABO THAT SUCKS and yes it IS being more common place here.
I was raised by a German Shepherd from age 12 to 25.
Presently I have have a half Austrian Shepherd/Pointer that lost his mom 3 years ago at 13yr and his sister last year at 12 yr old.Reaux is 13 yr old.
I do believe it is hard for a dog to accept a new owner and location but it is an easier transition with loving environment.
If you can not find a great place for Raider in Florida,Let me know.
I will take care of him for the rest of his life.
Of course if you were to complete your service or were able to take him back,he would always be welcome to his original master and no one else.
I live south of Austin and if you want to check out plane fare to Austin,TX.
    Do so and PM me.
I ain't rich but he will never go hungry and he will live his life happy.
    Sincerely,
    Martin F. Gorchs
