    Hi all
I am getting my 65 ready for paint and wanted to do a body color gas cap.
Mine bar isn't parallel to the ground when tightened.
I think that is the look they were meant to have.
Anyone know of a fix? I searched but found a lot of other leaking issues not handle fixes.

I saw the sweet billet ones for sale by a member, but would hate to paint that.

    Thank you for the help!

    Ed

How about a photo of the one you have...both front and back. The stock one has a straight bar that should be horizontal when installed and tight.

Maybe the gasket on the cap is too thick or thin

That's not a stock cap. I've seen caps like that forced into the filler neck, so, you may want to check the neck for damage. Does the cap hit a stop when you twist it in, or does it spin all the way around?

Up, chrome cap with a black handle? Not a original. Start a wanted ad for a used original cap.

When I first started making my caps I only had the one slot (no adjustment ). Shortly after selling a few I started having people tell me they were not lining up parallel to the ground. After that I just added the three other positions to help solve that problem , but never could figure out why they were different. I think it just comes down to the ramp angle that was formed on the inside of the metal spout and when the cap comes tight. You could always just polish mine and it would look nice also. Thanks, Steve

btw, that cap above is for the later model car.

Yes. And when the cars were sold, they had painted gas caps. But if you lost your original and went to the dealer to get a replacement, you got a stainless steel cap with a chrome bar - I'm guessing it was so the dealer wouldn't have to stock caps in all the available colors, or have to paint the cap body color. Just screw on the shiny cap and go.

So why isn't my original cap exactly horizontal?

It goes a little too far when you put it on.........

The one George Jets suggested (msg #9) looks correct... (whoops, see my post #15)
The ones I picture were used on my 65 Barracuda and the handle was parallel with the ground when tightened!

Here's a couple photos of my 66 cap and my 70 cap for comparison. The 70 cap is the blue one.

ah, toolmanmike's pictures show that the one in message #9 is for a 70' mopar... the 66 and earlier had a stubby neck! Now that I see the side view!
I Stand corrected .... the ones in My pictures ( post #13 ) are for 63 to 66, and were Used on my 65 as they have the Stubby neck ! I Learn something every day :)

The one Toolmam posted is correct 66. I’m getting old but there are differences between 64/65 and 66. My cap is very slightly off when tightened all the way, I just back it off a bit

Can use a couple extra gaskets on it to help it align if not sitting just right to work with your filler neck.

If you're getting a car painted always get an extra gas cap painted with it, that way you will never lose the first one. Fail to do this and you'll lose it in a month!

I bought a mid 60s ford pickup cap. Drilled out the center so it would come apart.
The rubber gasket slipped easily over my 67 dart cap and with a little finesse got it under the center part enough it stays in place and seals well.
