Hi all, I've got a small problem with my gas cap that I'm hoping to crowd source an answer for. I remember back in the 80's my dad removed the stock gas cap on the Duster and put on a locking gas cap, for obvious reasons as we didn't have a garage. Now I'm old enough to have my own garage and would like to put a regular twist-style gas cap back on for aesthetics. I've now tried a version of the stock cap I found in a scrap yard on another Duster, a version from Year One, and yet another version from Summit Racing, and I've got the same problem with all three: the cap will get just tight enough to sit in place, but it doesn't tighten to "lock". It just rolls through where it should lock and back to "loose". Is there a piece that had to be removed from the fill tube in order to make the locking gas cap work, and if so what was that called? What am I missing?

The 71 is a 1 year only gas cap. You could try posting a Wanted ad...

Yeah, lovely. I've got caps on both sides of what I need. Many thanks!

If you can't find a 71 cap, you could change out the filler neck to the 72+ style. Those later caps are more readily available.

I would hold out for an original 71 cap. They pop up on the net occasionally. Good Luck

        Is that a direct replacement?

I believe the 71 neck mates up to the inside of the fender and the 72 is fed from the outside of the fender to the tank.

Yes I've heard this as well. I'm in the same situation with my 71 scamp.

Anyone have input on this source?

I have been through this whole ordeal with my '71 Dart Swinger. In March/April of 1971 they changed the distance of the little locking ears on the gas caps making them further away from the inside of the cap. Consequently, when you spin the cap to tighten it, the locking ears just glide over the tabs/cams inside the fill tube and the cap never tightens up all the way. If you are lucky it gets snug but nothing more. I battled this for 25 years until I figured it out. Thank you for coming to life internet.

The cap you folks are looking for are hard to come by. I found a guy on EBAY who has a few for sale at a fair price. I purchased two from him and plan to keep the second as a spare. My original cap is chrome with a black handle. 25 years ago it was taken off my car and thrown into a lake. I was not happy. The guy on EBAY has a couple more of the chrome caps with black handles and he also has some that you can paint. I have his contact information if anyone is interested. He is a great guy and HONEST !!

Some caps have four ears and some have two ears. The caps with four ears have a purpose. One set of ears will lock the cap down. The second set serve as a safety feature. If there is pressure build up, the second set of ears keep the cap partially in the fill tube preventing you from getting sprayed directly with fuel if it shoots out the fill tube. I encourage everyone to use the caps with four ears if you can find one.

I need some help my friends. I've been all over FABO looking for specific details on how to remove vent window frame, glass, and side glass. I am working on my doors and want to replace all the rubber, felt, and channel seal. I've seen bits and pieces from members but have not found anything that can show me with any detail how to do it. I am really looking for photos or videos but any help is appreciated. Can anyone help me with this?

I believe I can help you with this. I'll PM you. Because these windows are tricky I did a fairly extensive write up on my experience with it (and input from others who have done it before me). I've been meaning to see if FABO would be interested in adding this to their "How to" articles.

My son and I would enjoy reading a "how-to" article about this procedure, as the vent window hinge broke and is on the list to fix this winter. Any info would be MUCH appreciated !

          Hello,
Just to let you know that I don't sign in to FABO on a regular basis and am not sure how the PM option works. I'm not even sure what PM means to be honest with you. With that said, I am interested in any information regarding the doors and how to remove the glass and vent window frame. Thank you.

I had the same problem finding the right gas cap for my '71 Dart, I purchased one from that supplier and it fits perfect.
