I've always felt they were very high-quality punches. I've got quite a few of them, but they're old, and I used to use them to punch holes in steel car bumpers(!) to mount CB antennas and trailer electrical connectors, so unfortunately most of them have become dull.

I'm wondering if a DIY'er can sharpen them (and if so, how do you do it?), or should I just buy new ones. Thanks, everybody.

Ive used them in the commercial electric field, they are great!
Do you have the hydraulic kit or manual screw type?

I just used one the other day thinking I'd try to sharpen using a chain saw file. Maybe ?

I had used them before and just read up on your question and it is said to use a file or sander only on the face not on the outside edge. Its hardened steel and cautious on the heat. Replace the cup when worn.

They're pretty darn hard on the surface. Just dress the edges and I'll bet they're fine, but if you go very deep, you'll get into soft metal and ruin 'em.

Use stones, not a file.
