It’s time to start a thread on my 66 Valiant. First, some background.

I retired in 2015 and finally had time to get a fun classic car. I saw a photo of a 66 Valiant with grey lower paint and dark blue upper. Of course, I can’t find the photo now but I’ll keep looking. However, that car looked oh-so-cool and is what sold me on the year and model.

66 Valiants aren’t exactly growing on trees. I started looking and finally found one locally that was in workable shape for being 60 years old. It was pretty solid, but it was well used (however not abused). Everything on the car that could be leaking, was leaking. The carb was so bad that after a deal was struck for the car, I pulled the carb and took it home to rebuild that night and bring back the next day to drive it home. However, carb back in place and it made it home for a few quick upgrades.

I rebuilt the brakes, and replaced all hoses and fluids, new tires and rims, upgraded speakers, and a new radiator. All the tune-up stuff was replaced and tuned up. Then I just drove it for the next 8 years. I did take it to the track a few times, where it proved to be a mighty 19 second car. Pretty typical for a slant with a three-on-the-tree.

This car is a for-real survivor but a lot of the factory stuff is tired. It has 126K on the clock and I’m pretty sure those were mostly local miles over many years. It is the ultimate Gramma’s Grocery Getter. Seriously, if I were inclined to take up bank robbing, this would be my getaway car, as it’s pretty much invisible.

Cop: Did you see the bank robbers?

Witness: Yes, they ran out of the bank, got in their car, and drove away.

Cop: What kind and color of car?

Witness: Um, it was some kind of color and it looked like, well, a car with doors and stuff.

Here are some photos of what it looked like when I got it home.

So now, after many years, it’s time to start this project. I have a huge pile of goodies to go in this car, but this will be a slow process. I’ve made the mistake before of having a car torn down hard and it takes FOREVER to get it done. This one will be done a piece at a time. Cars that drive while you work on them are way, way better.

This one is going to get a complete upgrade for everything that you can’t see from the outside. I will not be doing paint or interior. When it's done it will still look like Gramma's Grocery Getter. However, underneath it will be seriously improved. The journey begins shortly.

I agree>>>>>never take one all apart if any other way!!!!! Like he said, the elephant and one bit at a time whjle YOU drive it!!!!

Looks like the ultimate survivor, and we all love survivors in any and all flavors.. at least I do !!!!

Love it!
Reminds me of one I had many years ago- white '66 V100 2dr. sedan with a half-disassembled slant in it. I traded an old sewing machine for it... That thing saw more engine swaps and combinations than I care to count- from commandos to 360s and everything in between. And you're right about the "invisibility" factor- at least at that point in time. The ultimate sleeper; sooo much fun! After many years it finally succumbed to the issues associated with being an original Wisconsin car (re: rust) and is now probably a refrigerator somewhere... man I miss that thing!

Nice looking ride Zach. Bout the only thing might need changed is the oil!
Hate to be a nay-sayer on this, but some of us have cars that never need an oil change. That's because they either leak it out or burn it up fast enough it never gets dirty. Just add another quart once a week or so. :)

You wouldn't have gotten away. lol
Probably not. It would take all day to make it to the city limits.

Well, it's going to stay a slant, so the sleeper business might be a bit overly optimistic. Maybe a snoozer instead a sleeper. We shall see how it comes out. I have a lot of really good parts on the shelf and ready to go.

It's time for a little more history to get us from 2016 to today. As you can see in the first photo above, I got it with red 13" wheels. Those didn't last very long as I found a set of 14" wheels and tires on Craigslist for a decent price. These rims were yellow to start before I painted them body color.

After a while I realized the 14-inchers I was running around on were 10+ years old. I splurged on 15" rims and Cooper Cobras which gets us to today in the wheel-and-tire department. I really like this combo so it's like to be there for a while unless I get the autocross bug with 17-18" rims but really I don't see that in the cards.

Other updates over time............

The radiator was shot so I put in a Champion to get by for a while. I had the original recored, we'll see if I use it or just stay with the Champ. That process is documented here:

66 Valiant slant six radiator upgrade/swap

Sadly, someone sawed out the dash for a DIN radio. I will probably fix this but it's way down the priority list. I did add a pair of 3.5" speakers in the dash and 6x9s in the rear. I'll add a subwoofer when I get into wiring down the road. For now it sounds good enough to last for a bit. I can't recall if the head unit was there when I got the car or if I added it later. Either way it works pretty well.

The brakes were leaky all over so I rebuilt them all. Dummy me, I didn't change the flex hoses so after a few years, one of them started to leak making the car pull hard to the right. I just fixed that and it stops straight now.

Then somewhere along the line I found a parts car at a reasonable price so I got it as the start in my own private junkyard. It's been hit pretty hard in the *** end but everything else is OK. Same year, same color, same trim, same everything except it's an auto while mine is a manual. The one thing I know for sure is coming off this is the left front fender. Mine got hit pretty hard on the left front corner. I don't think it's fixable but the parts car has a pristine one I'll swap out. I suspect my car met a tree or pole once upon a day, so the front bumper is also likely to get moved over.

A few years ago I took it to the strip to see what it would do. I could have ordered a pizza delivered by the time I crossed the finish line. I kept getting matched up with badass Chevys that hit the traps before I even shifted to second gear. First run, and then later on my best time of the night. Ummm, that's me on the right in case you're wondering.

Hey, I found the photo that made me want a 66 Valiant! I thought I lost it but here it is. Pretty sharp looking ride. I really like this two-tone look.

Fast forward a while, and I want to adjust the rear brakes. So far so good. However, some dumbass (that looks a LOT like me) put the floor jack under the gas tank instead of the differential. Hey Barney, lift 'er up and adjust away! It wasn't till I let it down I started to wonder what smelled like gas. A little investigation and it was apparent I'd put a tiny hole in the tank.

I fixed it with the two-part epoxy stuff a couple of times before I decided before I blow up my house maybe I should just put in the new tank. So last week I did. Much better, and the gas gauge even works with the new tank. Sadly, while the car sat waiting for a turn on the lift (with an empty gas tank thankyouverymuch), Mister Mousey and a pile of his shirt-tail relatives set up house in my trunk, battery area, and air boxes, and then ran all over the interior pooping and peeing all over everything. Here's a fair size trash can over half full of crap I dug out of everything. The last week has been a clean, sanitize, and de-stink the whole car fiesta.

That's it for now, I'm back in business and driving the car a couple of times a week. I'll have to think hard what comes next. I have a new 8.75 rear end with SG, 4-speed swap, complete front end rebuild, new t-bars, new shocks, new front brakes, new intake and carbs, some Clifford long tubes, and a new engine to work on. I think I'll probably button up the engine next as it's been sitting on a stand for about six years. I'll have to get new rear springs too, mine are shot even with a helper leaf to assist with the droopage.

It's been mouse pee de-stinkum time at Chez Halfafish. Gawd, the car just won't stop smelling. I'm on attempted solution #4 and it's better but has a LONG way to go. I'm going to keep fumigating the old bird, but then will be stopping that process to work on this thing for a bit. The trans blew up so I have a new 42RH, new rear gears, and new rear springs to occupy myself for a few weeks. Maybe different rear wheels and tires too if my piggy bank comes back from life support.

Zach ,someone recommended one of these things for removing stink.

Worth a shot for 30 bucks.

I had a good Mopar bud back in the 80s -2000s that had a 66 Hemi GTX for ever. He finally after decades restored it. Nut and bolt home garage deal, and new interior, everything. Well he took it one local car show and parked it in his "garage" with gravel floor. Sat for about 3-4 years, with a "car cover" on it. New looked at it! Missouri. He calls me up one day and wants to sell it. Now the interior stank BAD of mouse pee, the rechromed bumpers are rusted, the hemi will not even start. Great price, it was not on my plate at that time to just buy it, so I told him for that kind of $ I could have it sold in a day or two. and I did. The buyer pulled out all the interior and had everything steam cleaned. If I remember right, he order NEW Lengendary upholstry to replace the new Legendary that the PO had bought a few years prior. New carpet too of course!

The 2 tone look on those 66's and a good set of rims and tires makes a huge difference in their appeal. Just like Memmike's very simple 2 tone with nice rims.

^^^ I agree. It is so crazy just how a car's color (color scheme), tires, wheels, stance can make such a big difference in looks and appeal!

I used this,in our cuda after 3 years of storage. Mice had golden showers in it! Thankfully there were 2 rolls of blue shop towels that were sacrificed instead of the carpet or seats. Didn't get rid of 100%, but pretty good. Maybe with a steam cleaner would be better??

Thanks. I'm using a similar product, and I'm going to give another dose today and see how it goes. The ozone thing arrives on Saturday so hopefully between all this stuff it will stop reeking.
