I just had some green bearings from MP pressed on the axles. I installed the axles and there is obviously no adjuster with these bearings, but there is no end play either. Is this right? My first time with green bearings, just asking for peace of mind.. LOL :)

it's been awhile, but there should be a thrust button inside where the axle slides into the carrier on the drivers side. Did that get removed? Are the axles seated all the way in the housing? Greens just need to be all the way in. No adjustment

That will come out with the axle or drop in the rear end lube and get ground up. (ouch)

I knew there wasn't any adjustment, but I was expecting about .008 end play and there is none. Just curious if this is normal. I checked for end play with just one axle in and there wasn't any end play either. Retainer went flush against the flange when I slid the axle in. Thanks guys

Ya, Green bearings are just caged ball bearings. The play on the originals are because of the tapered roller bearings.

if you have the new style green bearings, the thrust button does not need to be removed ,if you have the old style it does need to be removed .

I didn't know this. They were just ordered through MP by my machinist, but how long on the shelf by supplier idk. I didn't remove the thrust button.

both styles are still used , but if the old style and the thrust button are used premature failure will occur .

When I installed the green bearings in my 8 3/4 (years ago), I did not remove the thrust block. After several hundred miles, the rear end started growling. I checked the flanges and they were bent a little (didn't notice this when installed). The axle ends were butted up against the thrust block causing a bind. The bearings were fried. I ended up putting the Timkens back in.

so how would I know? would there be any indication when the axles are installed? Would it hurt to remove the thrust button regardless?

Installed Green bearings from Dr Diff. He said to take out the thrust button.

Always a good idea to remove thrust block in center section when going from tapered rollers to ball bearings, regardless of type.

Interesting. So, looks like I'll have to pull the center section out and remove the button just for peace of mind.

I got rid of the tapered bearings because:
                                      1. one bearing was bad
                                      2. adjuster was rusted and froze. Many times the adjusters get ruined in bearing removal
                                      3. I liked the idea of no adjuster/non-tapered bearing.

I know I can see it. Think I can get it out from there? I've never tried.
