Guns, Dogs and Blades QnA

Anyone familiar with Sig and the mess they are going through with the 320?

I’ve been considering a smaller gun for carrying and I’m going back and fourth between the 365 and the M&P shield.
My .02
the 320 mess is old news that continues to get resurrected every few months. I carry a 320 all day everyday and have for years. It is my duty rig. By same token would the US Army select a platform that is not safe, and hand to a 18 year old kid that is scared to death? Follow the money and you will find where the mess starts. Side bar, check out the 365xl if you have large hands, much better ergonomics than 365. Great choice for concealed carry.

Just got done with a training cycle. I am the tall good looking one in front of the target. What you can’t see is a bunch of exhausted, dinged up, patched up, taped up warriors after three days with very little sleep and forcing boundaries in every arena, mentally and physically.

Hope you can recharge some batteries. I'm certain the hounds are being super attentive since you got home

My wife has to renew her conceal carry license tomorrow. In Arkansas we have a tiered system. You can take basic conceal or enhanced. The shooting qual for enhanced is very similar to LEO qual. Forces you to shoot from concealed, all with par times. Clear malfunctions, do reloads etc. again all under X seconds. In her class she is literally the only one going for it. The rest are just doing basic concealed. She is putting in the dry fire reps to be sure she passes. Folks think shooting is just a natural movement, nope ya gotta grind out the reps! Putting in the work is a thing. Notice the trigger finger discipline, and slowly and carefully looking the pistol back in the holster. Once you have made the decision to reholster, in essence the threat is gone, there is zero need to reholster fast. That is where we see the problems!

I do not do a lot of Air Rifle work so I don’t have much (read none) ballistic knowledge but I am guessing your zero is back yard squirrel distance, ten to twenty yards? So stretching out to 75 yards, what is holdover on your pellet rifle to make that kind of shot. A foot? I got no idea! With a projectile that light I would guess any kind of wind at all really moves ya around. I know some of the HAM (Hard Air Magazine) guys and man they take air rifle to a whole nother level.
The rifle I made that shot with is a 1250 fps muzzle velocity and it has a rifled barrel. My zero is 20 yards and the drop is about an inch for every 10 yards after that. At 75 yards it’s indeed about a foot. That 12 gr pellet slows down fast.

Wind is not much of an issue within 20 yards, but after that it’s a huge factor. Fortunately the day I made that shot there was virtually no wind to compensate for.

I have had a light breeze push it sideways 6” at 40 yards.

Air rifles are like a short distance equivalent of long distance shooting with a high power rifle. All the factors are the same, but magnified by at least 10x within 100 yards. I find it a great way to keep my skills sharp while staying inside the boundary of my suburban property.

Ammunition is cheap too!

That makes sense! Sounds like a great way to stay sharp in town. I forget sometimes how blessed I am to live where I can shoot high power anytime I want. Same token it has its drawbacks as well, flooding, coyotes, etc etc.

We don’t get a ton of large wildlife here. A few red and grey foxes, a bunch of deer and an occasional coyote wanders through. We live within a mile of a large creek so they come up here once in a while.

I don’t mind the foxes, they keep the local rabbit population in check. The deer are a pain since they munch every shrub and planting they can find. The coyotes aren’t around often enough to be an issue.

Although the air rifle isn’t all that powerful, when I hit a deer or coyote in the *** with it, they jump straight up and run!

I can’t hit them with anything high power in this environment, but I can make them think twice about being within my field of fire!

I confess I do like to hear the bobcats screech, and honestly I like hearing the song dog’s (coyotes) melody! We have a pair of bobcats on our property which keeps our rabbit population at zero. And of course Armadillos, our Belgian Mal managed to get one very ripe shell stuck in her collar tonight. Ya can’t make this up. Mom had to do the rescue!

Well Jodi just got home from taking her enhanced shooting qual for conceal carry. She outshot the class and landed a perfect 50/50 score. That’s our girl! I wish I could tell you the qual is brutally difficult but I cannot. It is low side of medium in my humble opinion.

No sweaters but they are in the barn. You get the Dillon shell and smell out of the house?
