Removing the headers on my '69 Barracuda, 318, auto. Right side was a real bear. Ended up removing the oil filter adapter for clearance. Having trouble with the left side now.
Removed the inner tie rod end and split the center link from the pitman arm. Unbolted the starter and still can't get it to wiggle out. I promised the headers to a young friend of mine who is putting his first car together. If it wasn't for that fact I would break out Mr. air saw and make short work of them!
Am I looking at having to unbolt the motor mount and jack the engine up, or possibly remove the mount altogether?
Thanks guys. Pete. :BangHead:

Get the car 2' or more off the ground, unbolt the DRIVERS motor mount nut and jack the engine over a bit, remove the starter and I bet it will almost fall out the bottom. Did my Dougs this way.

  1. Car has to be high. I'm talk'n all 4 wheels on ramps, then you may need to use a jack to raise the body up a couple inches on the side you are working
  2. Engine mounts have to be loosened. I find the engine side I'm working on has to be lifted (cocking the engine) about 2".
  3. From this day forward, go Doug's on 67-76 A-bodies. I made that decision a few years ago, no looking back.

Do the friend a favor and sawzall 'em anyway. If the steering linkage routes through the headers, you're gonna lose a friend if you give those to him.

Have to likely jack up engine to get the driver side out.

Those jungle jim, wrap steering parts, headers are not my favorite.

All good advice but lets see or tell us exactly which headers are on the car and we can be more specific.

Never had to split the steering when doing dougs or tti. Turn the wheels hard left IIRC and they center link moves just far enough to get them in or out. I still jack up engine for driver side, I cheat with an engine hoist. LOL

And this is why I use the cast iron manifolds on my 340, 440 and Gen 2 Hemi.
I tried the headers, not the real "rape, pillage, and burn" priced ones. But the basic ones that have the linkage going through the middle. I have manual steering, and a filter adapter to swing it back, and after "massaging" it with a hammer to get clearances all over, it looked like crap and just created more restrictions. I sawzall'd them off and threw on factory manifolds. So much easier.

Throwing a grand down for headers is outrageous. Next time I'm getting a set of block huggers, eliminating the mounts, and running a front engine plate.

You should try headers on an early A! You'll need to jack up the engine on either side to remove/install them. 65

That sounds like no headache to me. Normal stuff for header install and removal on a Mopar.

I had Dougs on my 65 Valiant with a 360 and they were some of the easiest to install I've EVER done, including Chevys. Yeah, you have to remove some stuff and jack the engine up, but follow the instructions. It's time consuming, but nothing my wife couldn't do!

a buddy and I put Doug’s on my 68 Dart. Once we had the front high enough off the ground, they went in pretty easy. I just used a short filter instead of the 90° adapter. The steering was apart at the time anyhow since we converted it to manual steering at the same time. I did the swap more so to not deal with power steering and it just gave more breathing room for the headers to fit.
