Regarding my 67 barracuda, what is the difference between the 1 5/8 rheostat or the 1 1/4 rheostat does it really matter?
i see both at classic industries for the same application.

As far as I can tell, you want #9340 (with 1-5/8). The size of the rheostat is not really relevant — the actual difference is that 9341 and 9337 both have an extra ground tab, because later vehicles had an all plastic dash. This doesn't hurt anything, but wasn't original to 67.

ok thanks for the help. the current switch has a ground tab, but i know its old and not working properly.

pull your switch and look at the rheostat, might be repairable, the sweep might need adjusting?

Have you tried some electronic tuner cleaner? It's save many of my vintage stereo receiver analog switches.
