My name is Bill Basore. I own Desert Classic Parts. I develop reproduction parts and other products for the automotive market. If you have ever wanted to explore commissioning a reproduction part, I can walk you through the process.

Some of you know me from rebuilding fuel sending units. I have been getting quite a few Mopar senders lately so I though it would be a good time to get more involved.

I developed an inexpensive ($30 shipped) gauge tester for Ford products and I will have a Chrysler version out shortly.

If you also dabble in the Mercury Cougar world I am very active there. I am a life long car guy and my specialty is 12 volt electronics. I was once a member of senior management at Rockford Corp.

Admins: I tried to reach you through the contact form and it resulted in an error message that I needed to join and post a few times before I could send you my email address which appears to be a required field. I would like to see what is acceptable here regarding my products and services. Thanks!

Can you rebuild original units, but change the pickup tube 3/8" ?

The advent of off the self stroker kits, better cylinder heads, better cams all have increased the Horsepower output of typical musclecar motor rebuilds. We need more fuel to feed that HP.

I can rebuild original units. Changing the tube size is a really big job. I can do it. A standard rebuild is $90 including the shipping in the USA. Changing the tube would run significantly more. I've done a few where I added a return line for EFI and a tube refit would actually be much harder than that.

You do have a point. Let me think about this and see what I can figure out

You'd probably have to invest in tooling, fixturing, and/or sub-part manufacturing of the 3/8" to reduce your labor $$ cost. $90 for a good part over a $60 semi-functioning part is palatable. You start going over 3x the lesser fuel senders, customers start looking at other options or just put up with lesser fuel sender.

I hope so. I actually own and run ClassicCougarCommunity.Com forums so I understand the possible concerns. I am interested in a building a positive relationship. You can only imagine the kind of stuff I have to deal with when you run a forum about Cougars.

You pretty much nailed it. Typically when I am performing miracles it is because some one wants the original "built with" part or at least to have an OEM part number that is correct. Building a reproduction sender is actually a lot less expensive than the labor cost to lovingly disassemble and rebuild a 50 year old part. Incredibly I trade reproduction senders for '64 through '66 Mustangs straight across for a rebuildable core. I have dissected the reproductions and they cut a few corners in order to hit the lowest price. For a great many people that is all they need so I have no issue with that. I manufacture reproduction parts too, but only those that can be built to equal or better than original equipment.

If you can rebuild the original sending units, you will be a great asset to the classic car community. The cheap Chinese junk that is being dumped on the market is terrible, at best. John Wolf got out of sender rebuilding recently & he did tremendous work. I personally have installed 4 units that they rebuilt & they were spot on.

Welcome! I have a question about a reproduction part I would like to be made available for the Dodge truck guys.
This fuel filler tube. One side is 1-3/4” ID the other is 2” ID.

That should be easy enough. I have a good friend that is doing several similar hoses. I need to see what rubber formulation they have settled on to deal with ethanol in gas, and what kind of quantity we might need to run. Stay tuned.

I will let you know when and if it is needed. Thanks! If you know, can you provide a list of applications for that part? (years and models of vehicles that used it)

                    I think it is only 1974 & 1975 Dodge D/W 100/200 trucks.

EDIT: I have more intel stating the truck parts book shows 74-77 with the 25 gallon fuel tank option.

Well that turned into a very long break. I will save you all the soap opera details.
I did get some valuable information.

In the Ford world Marti Auto works is the go to place for correct hoses, ignition wires and other goodies (also the home of the Marti report). Kevin is a friend so I asked for his assistance. The news is not good.

With the advent of ethanol in fuel there have been a lot of car fires related to failure of rubber hoses that were not ethanol safe. More fires means more lawsuits. I think you know where this is heading. The two large US based manufacturers are not interested in selling ANY sort of fuel hose, even to the degree they are discontinuing a lot of current very well proven items that are mostly installed by hobbyists.

So the answer has to come from overseas. I have a couple of good possibilities but if Gate and Goodyear are afraid maybe I should be as well.
