That is amazing. I'm surprised at how low the HP peak is. 5400 rpms?
I would have expected those heads to flow well way past 6000, maybe 6500. It will be great to see how gradual or steep the power drops off from 5500 to 6000. It might be protocol to only spin an engine to to it's peak and barely past it. I'd think that an engine that makes that much power at that rpm will likely last longer than one that needs to run to 6500 to reach it's power peak.
May be some short shifting going on. Glad I don't have low gears as they won't be needed. May be a challenge to get the converter to stall low enough without being loosey goosey.
 
Having that much power at such a useable rpm range will make it a blast to drive on the street, probably even with a 3.23 gear. No need to rev the guts out of it to haul ***!

The cam generally determines the peak if the heads are not limiting. Those heads can probably carry 6800 rpm, but peak lower.
 
Long story short, the engine made pull after pull, with no complaints, and while I feel bad we couldn't spend more time getting it dialed in perfect, it made those numbers pretty much from pull #1, with no chance to do timing or jetting sweeps, much less testing of other carb spacers and carburetors. I personally dont get to worried about dyno numbers anyway, and I do know this particular dyno has been proven to be 9-10% short. Most builders inflate there numbers, but that's dishonest in my opinion
Are you the dyno operator that tested this engine?

It was certainly a LONG day, and not without drama, which seems to be par-for-course in this bussiness.

Long story short, the engine made pull after pull, with no complaints, and while I feel bad we couldn't spend more time getting it dialed in perfect, it made those numbers pretty much from pull #1.

Unless you're referring to your own experiences with other people...
 
A high quality torque converter, some drag radials and good chassis set-up will make that car less scary to drive on the road. At least for you, everyone else will never know what hit them and go home telling tales of the little '72 Duster that smoked 'em.

Torque converter is next on the list now that I have some info. I sell tires for a living so I can find some drag radials. It has a brand new cal trac rear suspension with Bilstein shocks so hopefully it will be moving forward while spinning.Frame connectors as well. Might be time for a driveshaft loop :realcrazy:

With torque like your making i would consider , for a future upgrade 1350 u joints to complament them Drag Radials . Very nice engine .

Looks pretty solid thru the end of the pull(5800+).

In the car I’m sure it will still be pulling hard thru 6000.

I realize the dyno was acting up, but with some tuning, there might have been a little more left in it.

I’d take the “too fast- no data” for the early part of the run as an indication that the engine was running away from the dyno during that part of the pull.

Looks like they were able to capture the data before the pull started though……642tq@3981 rpm.
That ought to be able to chirp a tire:eek:

Don't see any reason to turn it 6000 unless it is a close race and pride gets involved. There will be so much torque on the shift recovery a short shift may run as quick.

Definitely more in it with tuning, unfortunately the dyno problems and the time constraints kept us from getting the ultimate numbers, but I feel pretty sure theres another 20 or so left in her, and this dyno has been proven to be about 9% low compared to the others in the area. Its NOT the dyno to use if your looking for hero numbers, for damn sure!

Does the dyno have manual load control?
 
Thought that could be the reason for the "too fast sweep rate" below peak torque.
