Small dragstrip outside of Temple Texas.
It happened just as test n tune was starting, maybe 10 cars had gone down the track. The car in front of me, a 2013 or 14 Mustang, takes off and I'm waiting to do my burnout when suddenly I see car parts flying everywhere about 2/3 of the way down the 1/4 mile. The Mustang, which was in the right lane, went sideways to the right with the front end of the car up over the top of the guard rail and the back end still on the track. The metal railing basically sawed the car in half just behind the driver and the front end was outside of the track. The car never rolled. The front half kept sliding and turned back straight, it hit a large oak tree at probably 80mph or faster, according to people who were along the fence. The back end wound up all over both lanes of the track. The driver was killed instantly, as far as we could tell. It's amazing none of the spectators were hit by flying debris. Although no announcement was made, it was obvious that the track would be closed for the rest of the night for cleanup and investigation by authorities. We trailered the car and came back home. It all happened right in front of the driver's brother who was standing against the fence.

LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY — An accident Friday night claimed the life of a Killeen man racing at the Little River-Academy Dragway, David Borders, Little River-Academy fire chief, said.
The accident was called in at 7:14 p.m. and responders were on the scene by 7:16 p.m., Borders said.

Officials identified the man as Allen Mouton, 48, of Killeen.
He was driving a 2008 Ford Mustang Cobra. The vehicle made it halfway down the track when Mouton apparently lost control, rolled over a guard rail and struck a tree. The vehicle was cut in half upon impact, according to Donnie Adams, spokesman for the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.
The scene was cleared at about 8:40 p.m

    RIP to the driver.

That track has had always had a reputation for being sub-par. Haven't been down it in years, but I remember a good sized dip right around the 1/8 th mile mark. Track prep, or lack thereof, is a constant discussion on our local forums. And those trees are just unnerving when you're flying by them. Hopefully, this will cause some needed changes, and not result in a closing of the facility. Always hate to see another track go down, even a bad one.

    Wow!
That's horrible news, a roll cage might have saved his life.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the driver who lost his life.
How are you doing after witnessing this?

Never good seeing something like this unfold. I have been there so don't be afraid to shoot me a pm.

I never liked the idea if having trees next to the track or guardrails instead of barriers. Also do you know anything about the car? Was it some sort of super high hp stick shift car? Seems odd that he would spin going that fast.

Anyways it always hurts hearing about something like this in a sport we all love so much.

I'd bet it wasn't so "killed instantly" for the driver.
    What a shame.

Possible the car that ran before him spit some oil on the track? A friend wrecked his freshly built Pro Mod car into the wall at 155 mph because of that very reason. But that was a 1400 hp car. So one has to wonder how he spun that far down the track.

This is really sad news to hear someone lose their life like that.

Yea it's really hard to know what exactly happened unless you were there during the investigation. I go back and fourth in my own head about the dying having fun excuse. I tried my hardest to convince myself that was the case in my friends death back in April. The reality of it is that for that split second between loosing control and death you know he was not having the time of his life.

When racing this is one of my biggest fears. Something going wrong at the big end while wearing a lap belt and going 100 mph. Maybe this winter will give me some harnesses.
