After calling A&A, and tearing down my transmission once again, I think I have come to the conclusion that the mystery snap ring is not needed.
Thanks everyone for your input. It is still very puzzling. My best guess is that I saw a snap ring laying around my shop and thought, "oh this must be part of the tranmission" and tossed it into the jar of hardware I was collecting. It is really weird.
