I bought this car 3 yrs ago and the owner said it was an all original,
matching numbers car. 1st owner, a woman in California, 2nd guy he bought it from down his block (Colorado), then me.
    Car wasn't cheap.
Had some work done yesterday by a member of my local Mopar club
who used to be a mechanic for Dodge years ago and he thinks car is not
numbers matching because part of VIN# is not on motor.
BUT he also said that it shows my motor was cast in 6-19-67
and VIN matching started in '68.
    Confused and a little disappointed!
Can you guys shed some light?
    VIN: BPH29P8B129717

    MOTOR: 6-19-67 DW340 2226 0100

    TRANS: PK2892032J 2225 2497

    Thanks!

The vin # on 68s are not located on the ID pad like 69 and up. It is located on the top, back of the engine on the drivers side, along the flange that meets up with the bellhousing. Take a look there and post what you see.

Well the numbers don't match, but were you looking at the right numbers?

Look behind the drivers side head. Get a flashlight. On the flange where the bell-housing bolts to the engine you should find a stamped number. That number should match your vin.

      Just talked to him.
He said on small blocks, the #'s are on front of motor?
      Mine is a 340 Formula S.

He is wrong early 68's are on the bellhousing area about the 11 o,clock position as stated by others here.

The 68 I had didn't have the vin. on the fender tag either it had the shipping number off the build sheet.

I don't care who you talked with. I just posted a pic showing you exactly where the number is on a 68 small block.

My car is a 1968, 340 Formula S too. Although you can't read the number in my pic the arrow is pointing at my matching vin stamp.

Sorry. I got a little frustrated. When i go out of my way to answer a question, take a pic, figure out how to add an arrow and text to the image only to hear the "He said" line….. I feel my time spent helping was ignored and it pisses me off.

        No problem...I hear 'ya.
I understand your frustration and really appreciate the help.
I think this guy is more familiar with big blocks.
I'm not with the car right now, but I will check all this ASAP.
Anyway what DO those other numbers mean and how do I know if
motor matches tranny? BTW...great looking car, is that original paint?
I also have the broadcast sheet if that helps.

I agree with 1968formula, I parted a 68 S out a few years ago and the last 8? digits of the VIN were stamped right where he he said they are, also on the trans in the same spot.

Casting numbers are, well, cast into the block. And many times blocks are cast well before the car and engine are assembled, and don't forget 68s actually came out in late 67, same as today's new cars.
My block was cast in January, and the assembly stamp is May.
I believe VINs are stamped in, and 1968FormulaS340 posted a great pic, and the assembly info is also stamped on the front of the block, (it is for BBs, pretty sure for SBs).
How someone who worked for Dodge would not know any of this is strange to me.

I just had a chance today to look where you suggested.
Both motor and bell housing match my VIN.
Wanted to thank you and all the others for the great help.
The photos you posted were key!

Well for 69 it won't be there, the serial #(VIN) is located on the right side of the engine midway at the oil pan rail and right side of transmission.

I have a 68 GTS numbers matching on engine and tranny. Are there any other parts such as diff that have vin numbers? or date stamps?

I also have a 68 Barracuda, but mine is a Slant Six. Are the numbers I should check also around the bell housing 11 oclock position? Or are they located somewhere else?

Not sure, but it really only matters to you if you let it matter. I pulled my Slant 6 out, sold it and put in a Stroked 5.9 Magnum with EFi, Even if the numbers had matched with the Slant 6, it wouldn't have stopped me from making the car run better, get better mileage and be more reliable.

Wow, old thread, but it's your car. Do what makes you happy.

I have people ask me if it came like it is now, so far I have resisted saying, "of course it did, and it's all numbers matching too". Most would believe it, because they don't even know what number's matching actually means.

Under the trunk weather stripping on the passager side IIRC and under the coolant sticker on the radiator core support. Either the vin or body sequence number. Can’t remember which on a 68.
