I need to refinish my 69 340 unsilenced air breather. About 10 years ago when I last painted it I went thru hell trying to get a nice even wrinkle finish. I tried a couple different brands but I don't recall what they were now. Any advice?

Yeah I didn't cook it. But that makes sense, when I was messing with it before, the best result I did get was when I would put the Air Cleaner top in the sun and paint it when the surface was hot. Problems I was having was not a consistent wrinkle on the entire lid.

I use VHT, and I use a heat gun to get it to wrinkle. I did my air cleaner and valve covers.

I know it's not wrinkle paint but I have used this Auto Coatings Truck Bed Coating Spray Product Page and was surprised how close it was to the original finish. You can get at any auto parts stored or even Walmart. This shit is tough as nails too. Get a can and shoot something with it and see if that's what you want. A hint, hold the can about 10" away when applying and it will be very even.

I used the VHT and it did a fine job.

It goes without saying that prep is key.

I sandblasted these covers, cleaned them well, and sprayed multiple coats WITHOUT letting the first coat dry.

Let them sit in the sun to cure.

It's difficult to capture the wrinkle in a photo, but these turned out pretty darn good!

I've had good luck with the VHT also, and another time I tried some wrinkle black that I bought at the Harley Davidson dealership. It worked well, but as you've probably already said to yourself.....it cost out the ying yang for one can of paint!

That is the same air cleaner I need to do. I'm picking up some SP-201 VHT today.

Send it to cudachick (phoenix specialty coatings) she does exellent work. And it will hold up better than paint. Thats what I would do

I spray the part with a good 2-3 coats of paint, then take my heat gun and go around the entire piece warming it up. You can literally watch it go from glossy black to the flat wrinkle finish in just a few minutes.

Krylon use to have a really good wrinkle paint, but for some reason it has been discontinued.
So now I use the VHT paint, with very good results.

Harley, as mentioned, offered many different texture paints through the years, but they never matched to OE very well. I still wonder if the factory was powdercoating that stuff.

Which is why I'd suggest Cudachick as well.

Another vote for powder coat. I've tried Krylon and VHT. Results were okay but it can be hard to get even results (wrinkle) across the entire piece. Being rattle can it's easier to damage later. When I re-finished by blower case in powder, it came out perfect and beautiful.

Add me to the list of people that used the Harley wrinkle finish. It was many years ago and turned out good. Slightly uneven result, but that was likely my fault.

Plastikote here Roy. Worked amazing. Put the valve covers and 340 air cleaner o. The bbq(low) maybe 150* and turned out perfect. Only down side is keeping them clean

It's doubtful. The process was not in wide use until around 1980.

I was referring to the Harley Davidson factory on the late nineties and newer models. They used wrinkle, pebble, matte, gloss, and even 'denim' finishes

Oh, I thought you mean MaMopar. I'm sure H-D has been powdercoating parts ever since the technology was in widespread use. Can't think of many large manufacturers that are not using it today, if they have the choice.

They powder coat a few pieces but it's typical limited prep and high volume results. It blasts right off as easy as paint, and if it was done right that wouldn't happen.

@Abodybomber, thank you for the plug but that place is in jersey and doesn't do any custom work to my knowledge. Here's the "right" one haaaa

I wound up using the SP-201 VHT black wrinkle paint. I sprayed it and baked it in the oven for 1 1/2 hours. Came out pretty good. Had a few blemishes on it which I sanded down and re applied the VHT. I then used a heat gun on it. Turned out perfect. Thanks for the help.
