You ever pulled the starter rope on a briggs n stratton lawn mower? The engine on it is a flat head.
Flat heads are extremely common before the mid-50's.
My old willys still runs around with its flat head engine.

No, Chevies and Buicks were OHV motors from way back - 1929 for Chevy, 1931 for Buick. Chevy was a six, Buick was a straight 8. Those old Chevy sixes didn't breathe very well despite the overhead valves, and had cast iron pistons, so didn't rev too well, either.

I've had this 49 Wayfarer for a while. Still has the flathead six, with dual carbs and an Edmunds head. Originally had a three speed manual trans with a fluid coupling and a clutch (senior Dodges had a more complicated 4-speed trans with planetaries and a torque converter plus a manual trans type clutch). I got rid of the fluid coupling and it's a straight three-speed manual now. Has disc brakes up front, and just recently converted to 12 volts. I have Fenton cast iron headers for it, but haven't put them in yet. It's a day or two away from having electronic ignition.

How about babbit beater, no oil pump. Mopar's flathead is a much better engine than Chevy 216 overhead valve 6!

I agree, but will note that in addition to vintage OHV Chevy stuff, Langdon's Stovebolt sells dual carb kits, HEI electronic ignition kits and reproduction Fenton cast iron headers for Mopar flathead sixes.

And Mopar Montana sells other Mopar flathead speed equipment, including performance reground cams and new Edgy finned aluminum heads.

In case you want to mess around with the old flathead six instead of swapping in a more modern motor.

I hope to retain the old flathead. Picking it up Mon. the 8th, 12 hour trip to Texarkana and back. Not looking for fast just fun.

I admit I have not got into the old truck craze yet. Trucks are a tool for me and not a toy but I can see an old (small light underpowerd for towing) truck as a fun toy maybe. Heck my Ram 3500 Cummins pickup is now what 27 years old, and it will make the run this Mon. to pickup that car. Old pickups are the hot ticket in Tx, but Tx is not a real Mopar state either IMO. Chevy crazy place.

Now if you really want to spend some money, there's this:

                      The Freewheeling Tony Smith
                      9h ·
Teaser shot for the new piston and rod package for 23" Mopar flathead 6 engines that I'll have available this Spring. Mike Lozano at CP is developing the pistons to go along with special custom Carrillo rods. Greatly reduced compression height, extremely lightweight, X-forging, narrow tool steel pins, PVD coated thin low-drag ring set, coated skirts and crowns. More info and pictures to come! Before you get too excited though, cost is forecast to be in the $4500 realm.

That's a club coupe. Business coupes don't have a back seat. Here's a pic of my mine before the Barracuda. It was packing a slant six & 904.

My long time friend and his son are putting this '49 Coronet Coupe back on the road after sitting for many years. Mostly stock so far except the seats they've picked at a parts yard from on old Cadillac. Original flathead 6.

I got to get wife to unload pics I took when we got back home. Yep club coupe. Seems like the sellers old uncle died in the nursing home at age 95. Looks like he had it painted and etc about 30 years ago. The PO said he could not get it running. I noticed he has a new 6 v battery hooked up backwards. Last running about 15 years ago or so.
IF that flathead needs rebuild, I noticed those engine parts for silly high. I rather kept it oem stock, bit I would also consider doing a slant change over, as I have several that should be good enough.

Those were pos. ground unless they changed it to neg. ground at some time. look at your coil and see if the + is going to the distributor if it is, it's still pos. ground.

MY plate is full, maybe tomorrow I can play with it some!

I am learning..slowly! Ha I do have a FSM and the eng. wiring dia. refers to D29 or D30, etc etc. I did learn that refers to the eng. and has that stamped on side of it!!!
Yep wired backwards. The guy I got it from is my age or a little younger. He inherited it from his 95 yr old uncle. He tried to get it started, pulls pugs out and leaves the out for ?? how long. He wants to try to turn it over by hand but...... And... Not good when plugs are on TOP of the engine! ha It had been parked last 20 yrs or so, as the owner went to the nursing home. Running, driving some point prior.
I enjoy learning about new things that I can develop an interest in. IF anyone reading this has experience with flatheads, please let me know if a book on "how to rebuild flathead Fords" is worth the $, as it probably deals with v8s mainly but I have to wonder IF the Mopar strait flathead and Fords version of really much different?
I know, someone will say "drop a 360 in it!!!!! ha

I don't remember seeing anybody mention the P15-D24 forum. Go over and get registered and a lot of good information over there.
