would it hurt the value , if i were to sell it in the future if i put in molnar rods and crank with some nice light forged pistons . or should i just keep it 100% factory they ran well when i put them in storage 12 years ago . just wondering what would bring in the most money if i ever did sell it .
    Thanks

I'm sure adding those items will increase value compared to a stock 340....hmmm...probably double value

Stuff you cannot see externally usually wont hurt the value. Then again it really depends on the car. Some guys get pretty anal with the super rare cars.
Whatever you do, save the original parts so it can be put back if needed.

Depends on where the car is that it came out of.

It would depend on what your actually trying to achieve dollar wise.....if your goal is to make as much profit on the engine then sell it as is without touching it......if your goal is to spend several thousands of dollars on it plus time and work and then recoup half or less when it's done then go ahead and build it how you were describing.

Won't hurt the value but it won't make it worth more. Most people won't trust someone else that built an engine anyway.

You'll never know the condition until you open it up and inspect everything.
It doesn't matter if it ''ran good 12 years ago''.
I have been surprised both ways when it comes to this...

By Molnar crank and roods with light pistons, are you looking at stroking it or just building a stock stroke engine with a light weight rotating assembly? I'm guessing that this is more about more power to make the If keeping it stock appearing with iron heads and maybe a day two intake like an LD340, I would probably go to a 3.58 inch stroke and run some iron heads reworked with smaller stem valves, light porting, and good rockers. But that depends more on what direction you want to go and what expectations you have for it.

My guess, in terms of profit margin, it will never be worth more than it is worth today, untouched.

not looking for profit just don't want it to be worth less , cars are not an investment just a hobby . maybe a super rare ferrarie or some other exotic might be an investment , but a dart or a 340 ? just fun

LOL......i'm almost speechless........well geez if you don't want it to be worth less then order up a CCW Bryant crank, Callies rods, Diamond pistons, Del West titanium valves, T&D rockers, heck may as well try running a set of W9's on it with a Dale Cubic or Braswell carb on top.......then it will be worth the MOST but you will be worth the LESS in the end......LOL

No reason to put in a high dollar crank, rods, pistons and the like unless you are building for performance or race. The stock engine only belongs in one particular car and if that car is being restored, the stock internal components are all that's needed. A built engine usually sells for more than a bone stock rebuild but often times not enough to cover the cost of the components and machine work.

I have forged and lightweight molnar parts on my stroker build, excellent quality.

Unless the bores have had it, to "refresh" an engine you would not normally replace the pistons.

If you are that worried about value leave your fingers off of it. Rebag it every five years or so until you die.

Or better yet the OP can ship the engine to me and I will store it for him. Yah I'll store it, that's the ticket.

Unless you find the exact car that 340 came out of its worth what ANY CORE 340 is. Nothing more.

As far as doing no mods except normal over boring or align hone, any parts inside are moot point. It will still be a 340 core plus some more $$$ to some buyers. I'd pay current Core value and maybe 1/4 the $$$ of the special parts. If you spent $15,000 in the rebuild I'd maybe pay you $5K to $10K depending on parts and who put it together.

Edit. I'd rather buy the core and spend $15K in my own pick of parts and WHO Machines and puts it together.

By quoting me, I am not sure if you are upset with what I posted in Post #21 or not. I was not trying to be a smart ass.I understand you are thinking about rebuilding it to use for now and maybe sell later. Again, USED, it will be worth a little more than a CORE 340 longblock and a little more for the special parts inside.

So many friends have bought used "Built with Quality Parts" engines over the years, even with receipts, only to find later when they take it apart that cheap used parts were used. I am not saying this is what YOU are doing.

Maybe it's just me but I will not buy a "BUILT" engine unless I can pull it apart and inspect the build. I bought a 410ci 5.9 Magnum stroker short block 2 years ago from a MAJOR 'On Line' sales. It got here and I did pull the engine apart and found some crud in the oil passages and 1 piston had all the ring gaps in line.

I am not in your market area as shipping from Canada to the Seattle are would be outrageous. But even if you were closer and I needed a 340, I would still buy a core block and do all the work myself. If it did have special parts inside I would maybe pay a bit more but NEVER more than 1/2 the retail price.

I'd say build it how you want it to run now. The special parts inside will not hurt the resale values but you will not get the value back.
