I really enjoy listening the guitar licks, lead and rhythm, and even the Bass. It doesn't have to be shredding to be good. In fact just the opposite. Like the duel on Hotel California between Felder and Walsh. I never get tired of listening to something like that. Love me some Boston. Fancy is Eddie Van Halen but watching him shred for 15 min isn't my favorite. Peter Frampton is another good one. Damn, there are so many. Brian May?

Hotel California acoustic, is just incredible.. and talk about how to end a song :):) ..... but I do love down and dirty blues also.:):):)

Living or dead? I think it should be living as everybody already has a favorite that's passed. FWIW, mine is the Master of the Stratocaster, Jeff Beck. Living, I throw out Joe Walsh.
 
I’ll go with the living for this one, because there is so much great new music coming from a **** ton of bands. The duo of John Jeffers and Cody Tate froM Whiskey Myers is hard to top. They have great songs, and hot licks for sure, but when you see them in concert, it’s no holds barred.

Another great band is Blackberry Smoke, led by Charlie Starr. Not only is he the lead singer and songwriter, but he is also the lead guitarist. But, not to be outdone is their other guitarists as well, Paul Jackson and Benji Shanks also chip in on a lot of lead work. Music is in good hands with these fellas, and their songs are all too notch.

Brian May and David Gilmour and of course Clapton and Eddie.
Depending on style, there are a bunch of great players, Chet Adkins was pretty dang good.
 
I never liked these 'best' competitions but I would put Ed King and Albert King up there.
 
Best at what... So many great players.

Guys like Gilmour might not rip up and down the neck, makes every note count... An economy on the fretboard that is really great.

Hard to say "that" person is the best. Everyone has an opinion. Always cool to see players that I've not heard of and their work. Just my 2 cents.

Ed King, Dickie Betts, Stevie Gaines and some of the southern rock guys... all works

Alex Skolnick from Testament is good and I like the work on "Electric Crown". Warren DeMartini has the best opening riff ever on "Lay it Down" (Fricken hand killer unless you have 12 inch fingers like Warren!)
Saw a 50 greatest solo from somebody on YT... had like 4-5 metallica and the worst part, 2 of the top ten were from Slash with NONE in top 50 from Michael Schenker. No Schencker in the top 50... yeah OK. LMAO part of the reason these best deals are interesting discussion points. If your ear likes it, they are great. Simple approach for me.

My vote would have to go to Warren Haynes. Here he is on Dreams recorded in Macon in 1991. Keep this in mind. Warren plays everything in standard tuning. Including slide guitar. Once you understand that, Warren is just on a different level. Some say the ghost of Duane possessed him during this concert and especially during this version of Dreams. I wouldn't doubt it.
