So my machinist is helping me put my 383 short block together, while on vacation last week he calls me and tells me my rocker arms are bad, says the pads are too 20160605_190107.jpeg 20160605_190146.jpeg worn. I'm using old isky ductile iron rocker arms. I have heard these were bulletproof and have found 2 sets locally. i just got back in town and haven't been to the shop yet but I took some photos of the other set I have at home, these are in the same shape as my other set. You can see the pads are worn, would these be unusable? Can the pads be machined to match or any other way to make these work? I've never used a solid cam before and have no experience with adjustable valvetrain. What do you guys think? If these are trash, Ive been looking for a good quality adjustable roller rocker, what have you heard about the Mancini Racing rollers? Good price, aluminum rocker arms, good on the street? Stock stroke 383 for street/strip, hughes solid cam mid 550 lift, 238/243. Thanks.

I'm with RRR. You can surface them. Or you can send them to Rocker Arm Speciaties, or what the new name is but they can repair all that stuff.

Those things are pretty much billet proof.

I years past I have run the 273 adjustable rockers on more than a few 340'S that had much more wear than that without an issue. If they were worn to bad, I would file them smooth again. Not only was money tight but there wasn't a whole lot of people making roller rockers for Mopars. We ran what we could afford.

Look them over for wear from bad oiling. Scoring on the bottom of rocker shaft.
Also dress and align pad to valve stem carefully with shims.
The assemblys can be rebuilt easy enough but should be done to the specific head. At least that's how I like to use them.

Did he elaborate as to what measurements are making them unserviceable?

No, he didn't specify why exactly. I'm going to stop by tomorrow after work and see.

Those pads are thick. They can even be dressed with a file if done carefully. It's not rocket science.

I think I'm showing my cynicism...but I've been hosed by machinists and shop owners in the past...

Yup, that's it. I knew them by the original name and can never remember the new one.

I sent them my Norris SS W5 rockers and they put needle bearings between the rockers. Made the engine turn over much nicer and stopped the galling issue I had.

I had a Black and Decker valve machine years ago and it had the provision to grind rockers. Did many sets. came out like new.

Find someone with the rocker arm attachment on their valve grinder...B&D, Souix and others had them.

Ship them out if need be...
