Large ring on yoke

what is the reason of this large ring on the yoke? Most shafts I have seen dont have it? Thanks

That's a vibration damper. Ford used them a lot.
 
I believe it's for vibration damping... simply added mass to lower the natural vibratory frequency of the yoke.

Had that just typed when Rusty beat me to the "Enter" key!

I was told it was a cheap way of fixing vibration. Saying goes "if it vibrates, hang a weight on it". Early front drive vehicles had them on half shafts also. Ford loves them.
 
I was asking because my new to me 70 Dart, with 440 mh engine 727 auto has one.
