I know these cars did not have a backseat

But...did they have the Grey fiber board that's usually behind the seat ?

Or was it just the braces / otherwise open to the trunk ?

From what I remember there was nothing back there except the braces. If you moved the fuel tank to the trunk you needed to install a firewall.

They had basically an oversized cardboard panel. I think Kramer was repoducing them when I bought mine. I used it as a pattern to make one out of steel to be nhra legal. I think it is hanging up on the barn wall if you need a picture.

This may not answer your question but... like said already, if you plan to race the car and want it to be "NHRA legal" you will need a rear firewall if you have a fuel cell. If you have a trunk battery in a box it needs to be vented outside. Not sure about having the battery on an open tray but I'd err on the side of caution and install a firewall.

Either way, the firewall needs to seal the passenger compartment from the trunk area which includes the sides and the package tray. Even without being NHRA legal I'd still want something more than a piece of cardboard back there. At a minimum it will reduce noise a bit if you care about that sort of thing.

Just to give you an idea on how to execute something sanitary - the car in the image below (not mine!) was done by Gary Ball Interiors in Indiana. Not sure if he is still doing it but he is/was the Mopar Super Stock interior guy. I did the same thing with my Duster.

They were 2 pieces unlike the 64 a990 that the package shelf was part of it. This is the one got in late 90's as a repop. Just remove or fold the seat back hooks over.
