i looked at a whole bunch of pics before i drilled the hole.

Is this it? I have no idea where the reverse light goes. But this is a 68 dash.

If it is, you can see it is directly below the lower dash mount hole. The picture are measured with the tape hooked to the dash base vs the frame structure it is attached to.

Heres pics and measurements. Been a while since I took it apart. I'm not 100% but mine is a vert so there is a "Top" switch/bezel mounted on dash also. But I'm pretty sure it's the hole to left of steering wheel for "Top" switch.
2nd pic shows location of "reverse" indicator.
Sorry for upside down tape measure lol.
Looks like 2 3/16" -2 1/4" from left edge of dash where ashtray fits in to center of hole.
Measuring from bottom of dash 3 3/16" to center of hole. See pics for measuring points.
Looks like a locating hole for pin also.
Hole is 3/4"

My 70-71's the light is on the right side of the column. So 68 is on the left side? Todd and I were discussing this because we are changing the 67 and 68 barracudas to 4 speed. The 68 has a lower dash pad. I had 68 4spd darts but don't remember where if they did have one that the light went. Also he told me the 6 barracudas we have don't have a map light switch . two are 4 spds and don't have the light. The 68's have fiber optic key lights.

No my 69 is on right side of column, to left of ashtray. My ashtray "hole" is where I measured from BUT you brought up a good point as 68 had lower dash pads and one on ashtray slide out. My measurements may or may not work.

The one on the left side of the steering column is for a map light switch. That’s also where the convertible top switch went, or the rear defrost switch.

The reverse light switch should be in the “middle” closer to where the shifter is. Not sure about it’s exact relationship to the ashtray on an A-body though.

Not saying it didn't happen, but the 2 '68 4 speeds I had (340 GTSs) did not have reverse lights. 1 was Inland console and 1 was Hurst non-console. Both were originals near as I could tell. Possibly a mid-year addition?

You have a point. Not an "end all" indication, but the first year a reverse light is mentioned in the Dealership data books is '69. From '69 up to '72 at least all the books include mention of a reverse light for the 4 speed cars. '67 and '68 just say they have a "reverse lockout"

That's because 68 and older cars with 4 speed had this janky shifter made by Inland Corp. with reverse lockout pull up T shaped lever on the handle. Guess Chrysler was trying to be fancy like GM with the lockout T handle thing. People were swapping em for better Hurst units so Chrysler took note and decide to offer the Hurst as standard equipment in 1969. It doesnt have a reverse lockout, so I am betting the lawyers got involved and said put a bright assed caution colored indicator before somebody puts it into reverse at a traffic light and let's the clutch out.

Well that makes sense, I forgot about the Inland shifters year range. So a '68 with an inland shifter probably wouldn't have had a reverse light indicator because it had the lock out mechanism.

Thanks all. That last pic is what I was looking for.

Isn't that going to put it in the middle of the lower dash pad on a '68? Seems like the "correct" place for a reverse indicator light on a '68 is not to have one at all...

The last pic is a 68 with the lower pad. Todd wants the light so he'll get the light. I have more lights then I'll ever use anyway. His car was auto on column so its not going to be original. This is his 67 he also has a 68

I put one in my 67s dash. It's getting a Hurst shifter 4 speed, so I figured it was appropriate. I added a map light, on the left and lined my reverse light inline with it but between the keyhole and ashtray
