Yesterday I made it all the way up to 72, if that is something

Went into Spokane and paid the lofty sum of 50 bucks for a 1961 Evinrude Starflite III, 75hp V4. Hell it even fired last night. It could run. Anyhow, it came with a bolt on transom mount, and I'm not about to drill into a transom on anything until I decide if it is what I want on there. So, convert to clamp mount. I have two old 50hp V4 Johnsons, so yesterday got busy and pulled apart the "fake" lower unit. This is the outer sound shrouding. The one photo shows the clamp mount that "came right off" of the 50 hp.

BUT I CAN'T GET the darn thing to come off the 75 hp!!! I've pried "pretty good" on the thing. Then this morning I realized maybe the rubber mount fittings are sticking in those square holes. I'll do some more likely tomorrow. Raining today, I'm working "at home" in the bunker

Happy Belated Birthday Del ! From what I've read on here the last year, if you can't get it up and running and mounted, NO ONE will !!! Best of luck, it's great to have something to tinker on !!

Back in the late 60's I worked in an outboard repair shop and anything on them things was a royal pita!

Its been awhile, but iirc, we had to use a torch on everything to get it to break loose, even on those rubber mounts. You just didn't want them to melt.

Good luck, sounds like you have a good handle on what to do, but its still a pita.

Edited to add: Happy 72nd.

LOL thanks. Got it in the barrel late this aft. Turns out the rubber mounts at the top of that piece that surrounds the front of the lower unit were badly corroded in place. A few blows with a hammer/ couple of screwdriver wedges, and off it came. Maybe tomorrow I'll see if it runs.

Good to know that the 'BFH' was the answer.

Happy birthday Del. You're a glutton for punishment.

My first ever movie.........Test running this old dog. Ignore the old man behind the curtain, as well as the "attractive background." The beat up truck box tipped over is gonna get cut up soon. I'm going to cut a big L shaped section and attempt to make a stern well for the "new" 14' out of it. Cost me 50 just like the outboard. The sheet metal shops want 200 bucks for a piece with one bend like that, with 1 bend, or want 50 bucks a bend for a simple L bend in "my" piece.

OK so I was trying to "figure" if this turd would sink the "new" 14', and was going to weigh up equivalent weight of concrete blocks, load them into the hull amidships, launch the boat, with battery and trolling motor, then move the blocks to the stern to see "how it sits."

IT CAME TO ME IN A FLASH!!! LOL

I am tearing down the two 50hp into their major parts, so HECK!!! Just loaded all the parts of one of the 50's into the hull, dummy!!!! When I get time, I'll try this out

So today was the weight mass feasibility study LOLOL, SUCCESS. loaded two trolling motors on the stern of the 14, fuel, battery, and a complete 50 which weighs pretty much the same as that 75. Dumped 'er in, and then moved everything "to the stern." I stood as far back as I could, heck that little 14 didn't even know there was anything there. I realize it will be a LITTLE different with it hanging off the stern, but still

On a side note, the "new improved" ramp at Fernan is a one vehicle deal only. some meathead came down there with a little boxcar SUV, and two molded rowboats, Screwed around for 10 minutes dicking with the paddles and fishing gear which he could have CARRIED down after dumping the boats off. He looks at me, standing in the parking lot, leaning on the trailer guides, and wants to know "am I waiting for him?" Then it turns out he doesn't know how to operate an SUV in reverse. Gets up to the top of the ramp then WANTS ME to move so he can drive behind me and park. Ya know guys, where I come from, ya do your own drivin. Ya don't 'xpect others to move (out of a parking spot) so you the idiot can make some weird move

This is Fernan ramp

I was backed in to the slot on the far right, facing the road. After "he" pulled out, I was going to pull up and over, and back in. He drove down the wrong direction. Backs up to the top and then sits there.........right in the road, turns out wanting to drive BEHIND me

Let me guess which state this guy came from. Not that coming from this former said state is a bad thing, but it explains a lot!

If you ever want to be entertained for a day, go down and watch the yo-yo's launch at the ramp. Never a dull moment.

If I was 15 years younger there would have been "something." A minor setback tonight. I have 3 of these v4's Turns out every single one is LONG SHAFT. That means either build a jack plate, and not too anxious to bolt stuff onto the boat until I see what is what with one of these, or build up the transom, or look around for parts to convert it to short shaft. "We'll see."

We (friend and I) had a Johnson 75 in the back of a late 60's 17' tri-hull lake boat. Thing kicked ***! Maybe pull a skier but never tried. He ran the lower drive without oil and seized up the driveshaft, Doh! I finally found a driveshaft but by that time his dad threw the lower drive out. Never ran again.
