I just fired up my 340 after 4 years of being offline and it went better than I anticipated. At this point I have to replace my aluminum radiator as it’s leaking. So I didn’t keep it running long. I did however notice a lot of smoke and I am guessing I have some header leaks as well as a lot of stuff burning off.

I am currently using 5/16 x 3/4 Alen Heads with Nord-Lock washers. I think 1” would have better engagement. My flange and gasket stack up is 1/4”.

What size bolt and head type do you guys use? Dealing with cyl 3,5&7 is tight.

3/8 head hex header bolts and 1-1/4” length. (I believe)
I’m running Doug’s headers on both my small blocks. Remflex gaskets.

if you find the longer bolts won't go 'straight' due to how close the bend in the tube is then fit those first on just a couple of threads. that way you can keep the header flange away from the head face 'til the awkward ones are all started.
neil.
