A member has an auto Trans I think it came out of his 70 dart he is restoring,
When I go to an automatic all I need is a flex plate, or will I run into anything that will surprise me to put this 70 model /6 auto on my 1966 /6 standard shift crank shaft.. I am sure I will most likely need a yoke and build a drive shaft ..

Thank you all for any input, he is about 220 miles away and said it drove and shifted great and looks clean inside, I will have it rebuilt if I go this rout :D

I am not sure but I believe the manual trans for an A-body is the same length as a 904. I put a 318 and F-body O/D 833 in my /6 auto '70 dart and used the original driveshaft with no issues.

You will need a torque convertor with the correct nose and spline for the combo.

Why would you want to convert to an auto ?
I think your opening up a can of worms Mike.
I say leave Victoria the way she was born.

your driveshaft should be the same ....904 and 745 are the same length.

i am not sure how different a 66 is from a 68 but i have all the auto linkage and apparatus from a 68 dart....from when i went auto to 4 speed

if 68 parts would work on a 66 ....it would be an honor for Victoria to share parts with Natasha (my 68 dart)

A manual floor shift? If he did that, he would have to change to a different style 3-speed trans like the newer a-body cars used...not a bad idea either Mike. But, an automatic might be nice too, car would still move out good, maybe get a different converter and swap in a set of rear gears....I always hated my 3 on the tree in my car, only thing I miss about it was the comments I got from other people saying how they remembered those LOL

Mike, if you decide to do the auto swap and want the automatic brake pedal, I know where some cheap ones are. Otherwise, you can always leave your pedal in and tie up the clutch pedal, your brake pad will be smaller but you might be used to it anyway. Leaving the existing pedal in would be easier and save some time and $ :glasses7:

If Rani's 68 parts don't work, I know of a 66 Valiant Signet with the automatic linkage in it too....I never messed with the auto stuff in these early-a cars. The car pictured is one I want to buy soon to part out, it also has the steering column in it too, I think the 1966 A-Body auto column shift is a 1-year only item too. Am I correct to assume you would swap to an auto on the column Mike?

he is going to need that steering column , if he goes column mounted.

this whole swap is going to be some work involved but with FABO as a parts source im sure he can do it relatively easy.

in fact i even have a good running 904 ....problem is how to get it over there

That 66 auto shift steering column is the only I know of in the sea of early a-bodies that are in my area :glasses7:

I think Mike posted earlier that he has a line on a 904 trans near him, but those should be easy to find anywhere...I am sure Rani you have more than one lol :D

Treva and I and my doc has been talking about not dring Victoria with my ankle/feet problems I have been having, Arthur is taking a tole on them and they want me in Texas to do some work on them when I can,
My tail shaft does not have the right tail shaft to put a good floor shifter in, no braket to mount one, Creed did say he can put a hydraulic through out bearing in it but my shoulders are being taken over by Arthur also, I will enjoy a automatic and like Johnny Dart and a few here I to hate to remove the three on the tree Victoria was born with..
    The trans is here http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=239197
And I was thinking the T.C he has will work for my swao from a 66 3speed to an automatic , or am I missing something ? He said I van have the drive shaft also, so if there is a defiance I can have one or the other cut down if need be from a 70 Dart to a 66 Valiant.. I am waiting to be put on my wife insurance to make the trip to Texas to have a specialist clean scrap my ankles so I get some relief, So, with all you see here do I need a different T.C. .. or will this be a bolt in and happy motoring ??? Thank you all for your thoughts but I feel it's time for an automatic cruiser :glasses7:

You will need an early 904 converter as the later maybe 68 up converters wont fit your crank register. Snouts too big. Iirc.

Well, if your ankles are hurting, an auto trans swap is the way to go, less foot and arm action will make you feel better and keep you happy driving her for many more years. Go ahead Mike, you will be happy with the auto swap :glasses7:

Also you can not just change the converters. There is different amount of splines on the input shaft in the AT. Up to -67 is small snout, few splines (17 if I remember correctly). -68 and later is big snout, many splines (21 I think)

Memike, all you need to do is have the late model convertor retrofitted with the smaller hub and you will be in business.

More bad news - to make it work properly you will need a transmission from ONLY a 1966-67 Dart or Valiant or Barracuda. The spline and crank issues rule out a 1968 or newer transmission or converter. The slip-joint driveshaft that your car has rules out a '65 or older transmission. Those were also cable-shifted.

I am not sure you can do it for this particular conversion. There are internal differences on the converters that make it hard to go this way (or so I have been told). I have had a converter shop go the other way (welding a late front to an early back).

There is a sleeve to use the early converter with the late crank. It's the other way that is the problem.

The 66 Valiant Convert I posted pics of has the trans in it yet, but the engine might be a 225....does that matter? Wonder how much it would cost to load the trans on a pallet and ship it to Arkansas? I would look for the right trans in your area Mike, don't give up yet, there has to be something....just be patient :glasses7:
