I have a 340 engine that I plan to build into a stroker motor with a target of 500+ horsepower. I’m looking for a machine shop with Mopar experience to do the block and head prep work. I live in Central Illinois and willing to travel to 300 - 400 miles to find a great shop. Thanks for your suggestions.

A member here. Maybe a little farther than you want to travel. But highly regarded.

These guys are 350 from Peoria.

I’m assuming NC Engine Builder is located in North Carolina? North Carolina and Wisconsin are both within driving range. I remember hearing about a machine shop somewhere around Kansas City. Anyone know about this!

Oidmanmopars Sons shop in PA

I just picked up my 340 from NC Engine Builder a couple weeks ago. Very happy with the service and results. I struggled to find anyone around here that could line bore/hone for new main caps and used honing plates on the SBM. They may exist but I didn't run into them. I had Kilpatrick rebuild my 727 automatic and they did good work. I could have had him do the engine he didn't have all the tooling and in talking to him about it, he had very specific ideas about what work and parts should go into it and I decided I didn't want to butt heads with him. NC Engine Builder worked with me and guided me around a couple of parts issues and we ended up with an easy 460hp on the stock stroke. I've got build thread on it in this section. Let me know if you can't find it or have any questions. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again and it's a nice one day drive each way.

Yup I've talked to him but not about that.
The one Jeff mentioned is the closest to me. Especially from work.
There's another one not far from home (other direction) but my son and I have had some questionable work come outta there.
That other shop very much depends on who within the shop that gets assigned to "your" project.
I used to have 3 of them in my town alone, all are gone now.
I don't think any of them are "Mopar specific".

Wow. Just looked them up on Google. Way up in streamwood... That's at least a couple of hours with "good" traffic
probably more because "good" traffic flow rarely happens between here and there during business hours. Might do someone near by good though.

Any GOOD machine shop can take care of everything for you. Find one close to you that has been in the biz for years. Ask around for reputation. Chevy Ford whatever. Machining is machining. And a valve job is a valve job.

A REALLY good shop beats some Mopar exclusive hack, any day. Believe me.

He's in Concord, N.C., but I promise that the quality of work is well worth your while to if you're willing to travel and fit in with his schedule. Hensley's Performance in Dandridge, Tennessee is also a good choice but I think that they're backed up for the next six months.

I don’t disagree with your comments. My first and most important criteria is a good or great shop. I do believe, however that there are nuances specific to each manufacturer and if they’re working on my engine I prefer the shop to be knowledgeable to not only do the basic work but to offer suggestions or helpful recommendations to ensure an optimal result.

Nuance? Like what?
