Small-town truck driver wins $300,000 Lamborgini supercar - and wrecks it just hours later

A small-town truck driver's dream turned to a nightmare when won a Lamborghini supercar - and crashed it just hours later.

David Dopp from Santaquin, Utah, span out his Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Roadster a mere six hours after picking up the keys as the winner of a 'Joe Schmo to Lambo' contest.

The two-seater Italian sports car, of which only 4,099 have ever been made and which, with its 6.2l V12 engine, has a top speed of 205mph, evidently had more power than Mr Dopp was used to.

'Yeah, I got it on Saturday and I wrecked it on Saturday,' Mr Dopp told Utah's KSL News.

Mr Dopp, a father of six, had entered the contest to win the lime green sports car about 18 months ago, as part of a loyalty card scheme run by a local convenience store chain.

But it was only the week before last, during a football game at Brigham Young University, a private Mormon college, that it was announced that he had emerged from the contest victorious.

He went to collect the car - which, with a value of $300,000, is worth more than his house - on Saturday and, full of enthusiasm, decided to spend the entire day giving rides to his friends and family.

He crashed it just hours later

Mr Dopp told KSL: 'We were coming up a hill, going around a corner; and as soon as we came up the hill, we either hit some black ice or loose gravel or something, and all of a sudden we just started spinning.'

'We ended up in a field, and I back-ended a couple of fence posts.'

Mr Dopp's wife, Annette, told the station how her heart 'fell out' when she heard the news from a friend who had been riding with him at the time.

Police told inSantaquin News the car spun out of control and went over a curb before coming to rest in a field 75 feet off of the road embankment.

Officer Allen Hansen from the Santaquin Police said alcohol was not involved and that the accident was most likely 'speed related' as the vehicle was moving at 'speeds too fast for the conditions'.

Mr Dopp is said to have admitted to police that he was driving at 40-50mph in a 35mph zone before losing control of the car, according to inSantaquin News.

He was not cited at the scene, but a case will be submitted to the courts pending possible charges, it was reported.

Officer Hansen told inSantaquin News that he had warned Mr Dopp before the accident to be sure to observe traffic laws, adding that he felt it would be difficult for anyone driving a car like the Murciélago to resist the temptation to floor it.

'It’s a super-light car, built out of carbon fibre with Z-rated tires,' he said. 'It’s a crazy fast car.'

Thankfully for Mr Dopp the car is not a write-off, and one of the requirements of the contest was that he arrange full insurance for the vehicle before picking up the keys.

Damage to the car includes a puncture in the oil pan from a fence post, damage to the rear bumper, and extensive scratches to the bodywork.

It is now on its way to Las Vegas, where Lamborghini specialists will determine the repair cost.

I would have sold it in the first place (or taken the cash prize, which is usually an option in this sort of contest).

As much as I'd love to have one, I couldn't possibly justify it, even if I won one.

Sure would be nice if the news could get the price correct. One said "worth at least $200,000" and the other one said "380,000". Yeah "worth at least $200,000" is an open number that could also be $1,000,000.

This guy should know that this car drives much different than his Frito-Lay truck. I wonder how much the taxes will be on winning this car. Wanna bet it ends up for sale.

This kind of stuff is, unfortunately, nothing new. There is PLENTY of "youtube" stuff where someone was tryin' to show off at a car show with their toy which is probably a garage/ trailer queen, and around/ crash they go

(Unfortunately I can't find any examples, because there is evidently some stupid game called "burnout crash"

Proof you don't need a Ferrari or Lamborghini to be an idiot:

Classic case of too much power and not near enough common sense..

Sorta like a bunch of people in 1969 that rushed out to buy Kawasaki 500s...
..the fastest bike on the planet back then.

Bike only had 60 hp for 380 lbs but the power band was like a light switch.

30hp@ 5700 60hp@6500. They became know as Widowmakers because one second you were riding it and the next second the front end was going over your head.

    UPDATE!

Seems the owner is being accused of crashing it ON PURPOSE for the insurance money. He had been told back in November that he had won the car and tried getting Jay Leno to buy the car when he found out he would owe $100,000 in taxes on the car!

That kinda takes all the shine out of winning something now, dont it?

Only the government would think a tax on winnings is a good thing. Thanks God the Canadian government does not tax lottery winnings! Not sure if they tax prizes like cars, but I'd think not if they dont tax a cash prize.

There is no tax on Canadian Prizes. Also if a Canadian wins a prize or money in the US, say Vegas, they will automatically be taxes on their earnings. BUT you can then hire a company (or do it yourself if you're good with paperwork) to get those taxes back. Problem is you have to pay the taxes right then and there first.

Years ago a Canadian couple were on The Price is Right and won a bunch of prizes and even a brand new car. The problem was they had to sell everything at a major discount due to being in the US on vacation. They couldn't afford to pay the taxes right then and there to bring the items to Canada (then apply to have the taxes refunded) and couldn't wait around to sell the items for decent prices.

What would insurance cost for a car like this? I don't think I could afford it.
