Magnum 5.2 & Doug's D453 Header Fitment Issues

-
The brackets might be but that driver's mount biscuit is smushed flatter than hell. Look at how much difference in thickness there ie between the driver's and passenger's side mount biscuits.
That's how the Schumacher mounts for slant six k-members are designed. The pass. biscuit is much thicker than the driver's side.

I have the same setup on my '68 dart. When I installed my Doug's headers, I had to shorten the steering column sleeve and shim the mounts to put everything in it's happy spot. Took some time, but definitely doable.

So just to clarify.. truck and passenger biscuits look the same but the trucks used thicker ones from the factory.
You can mix and match them to get propper clearance for various headers .
Schumaker may make there own . I didn’t realize they provided them in the kit .

Really? That's almost counterproductive looking at the pictures he posted. The engine clearly needs to be raised up. That mashed mount ain't helpin a thing.

Agreed. That driver's mount does looked mashed. After looking at mine, I ended up shimming mine 1/4" on the driver's side and 1/8" on the pass. side.

In his case, I think I would try the truck biscuit mounts. They are a good bit thicker and might solve the issue.

So what is the height measurement of the centerline of your crankshaft to the k-member…. I think 5 1/4” rings a bell but again the requirement is list on TTI web. Get this number and report back…..

See this here post. But know since you've added the headers, you will likely need to differ from the chart.

Did you grind the truck mount pads?

Probably in the above linked article.
Yes, it's an absolute must for the headers to fit correctly. To save yourself a lot of head ache It's best to do it before you install the engine. As I found out the hard way! I had to to grid mine down from underneath the engine bay. You will get absolutely covered in nasty dust form it. Don't forget safety glasses and face shield if you have to go this route.

thanks everyone for the replies. i found the TTI chart with the dimensions so i'll start by checking there.

someone asked if i ground the truck mount pads - i'm not sure what that means. i don't know what the truck mount pads are but i didn't grind anything motor mount related.
The truck mount grinding he referred to is the mid mount motor mount bosses on the block itself. They can sometimes interfere with header fitment depending on brand. They prevented my tti’s from mounting flush to the cylinder had. I had to grind them on mine.

hey everyone, thanks again for the replies and info. i finally took some time last week and got things squared away with the engine mounting and the header fitment is pretty well resolved now.

first thing i did was get a level reference across the flat spot inside the tops of the fenders up near the cowl then i checked the engine and yeah, the passenger side was way too low. i wound up shimming the passenger side up 1/4". i also extended the k frame mount hole forward about the width of a cut off wheel because the mount was visibly twisted.

even with shimming the passenger side up, that still didn't have the engine in the right spot left to right so i used a porta power and shoved the engine over towards the passenger side. doing this got the left to right alignment better but then dropped the driver side so that needed an 1/8" shim.

last thing i checked was engine/trans longitudinal angle. i took a zero reference angle off the bottom of the front frame stub and then measured the front crank bolt. angle was initially just shy of 5 degrees. i added a 3/16" shim under the trans mount and now the angle is closer to 4 degrees.

i also trimmed the plastic bushing at the end of the steering column housing. with all these adjustment, the headers basically fit perfectly. i will say one thing that really impressed me about the Doug's headers is that this is the first set of headers i've ever installed ever in my life that didn't need the mounting holes drilled or honed or oblonged out to get the headers to fit. that's pretty incredible for an overseas manufactured set of headers IMO. my father in law put TTI headers on the 6.1 hemi that we put in his '63 Fury and there were multiple mounting hole that were off and had to be drilled out.

Get a new drivers side biscuit mount, yours is saggy.

Might have to use a big flat washer, like with tti headers and power steering. I have a 67 valiant and know this well.

oh and i also got the starter motor installed. i just wasn't adventurous enough the first time i guess. i needed to think more like Houdini and twist and turn the starter and put it upside down and then start rolling it over as it was going in. went right in.

and "truck pads" are motor mount bosses - got it. and no, i didn't have any clearance issues with the truck motor mount bosses and the Doug's headers. i tested fitted the headers with the engine on a stand before it went in the car. nothing hit anywhere.
