Building a 404 stroker with an x block for a friend. It had a bad thrust bearing. Anyway I noticed it had 318 main caps. I torqued the caps down and the main bores were horrible. .001 out of round and .003 tight vertically. Some were .001 tight. So it needs line honed. It’s a 2 bolt caps. Would 340 caps with studs and a line honed be good for 600 hp or does he need 4 bolt mains for the center 3 caps. I heard not to do this on a stock block but what about the x block.

I think the 340 caps would be good. REAL 340 caps are much beefier than 318 caps.

Skip the girdle. It doesn’t do anything.

Call Kent Ritter and see if he has any actual X or R block two bolt caps that were take offs laying around.

Buy those and use studs.

If you don’t have Ritter’s number PM me and I’ll get it to you.

Skip any 4 bolt caps that has angled outer bolts.

I would say it depends on the max rpm for 2 bolt or 4 bolt main caps. 340 beats 318 caps. Ritter or other aftermarket would be better than 340 caps. Anyway new caps and you need to align hone it and then deck the block to the honed main bores. Stud rather than cap bolts are the way to go.

He has an X block. They didn’t have 340 main caps. They had their own caps.

Tried to send you direct message regarding X block caps but your inbox is full. PM me if you want.

I used ductile iron R3 caps and had them milled for my 340 stroker build. After line hone and ARP studs installed, it's ready for final diamond hone and assembly. The Ross pistons with top ring gas ports will put it at 11 to 1.ish.hers some recent pics.
