I dont like the cheesy spring clips/washers that half them on. Cant see why a threaded stud/nut wouldnt have worked?
Also a "fair bit" of outward flex when closing hood.

I drilled a cotter pin hole in each stud and use a spacer between it and the hinge. Allows me to push the hinge arm closer to the body and seems to to eliminate that outward flex being tighter.

I did the hood strut swap. It worked good but they have a life span and have to be replaced. I do not have the "groan" opening and shutting though.....so there is that.

                Nice looking hot rod!

I ended up cutting threads on the mounting posts when I had my car apart. Put jamb nuts on just tight enough to keep the arms to the body and they rotate with the hinges when opening and closing. Never loosen up and actually eliminated some of the "jiggle" at the cowl when driving over bumps. Never liked the cheesy setup from the factory from day one.

Early A tortion bar..... Talk about not attractive.

The springs were ment to be put on fast and easy, not replaced.

I installed the the push lock and then put a small worm gear hose clamp.to.keep it tight, but any of the suggestions work. Did the OP use the light spring for a fiberglass hood or the orginal? The light one is perfect.

I spray a little lithium grease at the pivot points. Chevy trucks were well known to bend the hoods at the hinges. That is where I got the idea from after buying a new hood.
