since it was such a pain the ass to get at the starter wiring I dropped the starter to install new positive battery cable. I can’t even imagine the fun I’m going to have putting the starter back in so I’m thinking mini starter. Does anyone have the part number I need? Car is 70 340 4 speed Duster.

I was hoping for a vehicle I can go pick up a starter for that’s compatible with the mini starter part. Isn’t a Dakota starter I can ask for at Advanced or NAPA?

A 92 Dakota V8 starter is what you're looking for.

Ya, I went to Car Quest and got one for my 96 V6 Dakota. Works great. I think the V8 starters are a little stronger.

Auto Zone lists a mini starter by application for most of these. I put one on my ‘73 Swinger recently.

I just bought one for a 97 dakota, works great on the 390 stroker. Clears the Thorley’s and the contacts aren’t super close to the block like they are on the big blocks

@72Dart6pack do you have information that all Mopar mini starters are the same or do you disagree that I went to Car quest for my starter?

Thanks for the info all......I'm going to make an attempt to get my starter back in tomorrow before I go an order a mini starter. No one in my area has one in stock so it would have to be ordered.

As others have stated previously, a '95 V8 era (plus or minus a few years) off of a Dakota works fine.....I have used the ones from Napa and have had no issues. No need to overspend on a specific high torque mini starter, when a stock Dakota one serves the same purpose

I put my old big one back in against many people's advice. They were right. I did it over with the one below and I love it! It turns over like it would if the spark plugs were taken out, LOL. Fast delivery too!

Something that may help getting that huge starter back in is turning the steering wheel left and right in order to get more room by moving steering linkage out of the way. I sort of remember doing that when I had a full sized starter.

I love the size and power of the mini starter, but I do miss the sound of the original.

I replaced mine this year and it went in with no trouble at all, it wasn't over price but sure was easy to install.

...just the weight difference when holding/putting a mini in place is worth it....lol.
Huge difference in crank over time too.......the big old originals always make it sound like your battery is half dead all the time.

I ended up getting a new mini starter.....I installed it yesterday. The upper bolt was the biggest obstacle but I was able to get it all fastened down. Cleaned up my mess of tools and dropped the car back down on the ground and fired her up.....I'm going to miss the cranking sound of the old starter.....The sound of the mini starter will grow on me and the cranking power is much better.

There used to be someone on here that made and sold an adapter kit to put the terminals down on the side of the mini starter where they need to be so its not suc a pain in the but to install the battery cables. Anyone know how to get those adapters?

I remember that it was pretty slick.
I have used a mini starter on two vehicles, my 73 duster and my old 78 power wagon, I just separated the two wires, and they will fit better.

On the oreilly website, i looked up starters for a 1992 dakota, and then a 1997 dakota and there were different part numbers for the different years, but yall say both will work? They both looked the same so not sure why the different part numbers..?

It appears that there is one mini starter for 91-95 Dakotas and one for 96-98. Can't tell you what the difference would be. They might be clocked differently to avoid something on the later model trucks? The basic starter looks the same.
