So I replaced the speedometer cable in my dart. Hooked everything up only to find that the speedometer still doesn't work right, bouncing all over the place. So I pulled it out of the speedometer end and watched it while I drive and it moves but makes a very annoying ticking sound. Im guessing my problem is a bad gauge but what about this ticking sound? I put dry graffite on the cable before I slipped it into the tube. Is there a right and wrong way to lube it? What can I do to stop this ticking??

IIRC white lithium grease was originally designed for this very thing; however I have yet to have any great results with it. My speedo sounds like it's smoother then yours but it still does the annoying jump until you get to a constant speed.

If the cable was not hooked up to the speedometer it could have just been flopping around inside the lining causing the clicking. When it's hooked up the speedometer input centers and stabilizes the cable. The inner cable pulls out of the liner on most cables. I can't remember which way you pull it out, from the top or bottom. If you do that you can lay the cable out on workbench and soak it real good with graphite spray. That's how I do all I install and it seems to work great cause it gets every part of the cable lubed (no dry spots in the middle.

They pull out from the speedo end.
